x It was quiet in the forest. At least it was as quiet as a forest during the day normally is. There were the normal sounds of wildlife but not much else. And among it was a young teen, wandering almost aimlessly. Samuel had planned on coming into the forest to get away from the academy for a bit, have a bit of time alone. Though he didn’t like to be completely alone usually, he had his moments. He hadn’t planned on going so far into the forest though, and he was now quite a way from the academy, unsure of whether to turn and go back or keep walking. The forest felt so empty, so absent of other humans that it made him a little nervous. If a kid dies in the forest and no-one is around does he make sound? Not that Sam thought he was going to die, but it still made him uneasy. He reminded himself that there may be people around, any one of those animals calling could be a shifter. Rather than comforting him like he’d hoped, this thought just made him more uneasy. What if there was someone out there watching him, disguised as some animal, who knows what they could be planning. Sam tried to shake these thoughts from his mind, tell himself how paranoid they sounded, but they wouldn’t budge. He began looking around even more nervously.
After a few more minutes he decided to actually turn around and head back to the academy. After all, if he did get sick of this entirely he would just want to be out, and the more he walked the longer that would take him. Stopping on the spot, the young boy turned so he was facing the way he had come. He would never have done this where there were people, imagine someone just turning on the spot in the street and walking the other way. He would look like a fool. At least there was no-one to see him do that. It wasn’t the best strategy for getting out but the woods weren’t too big, even if he was going the wrong way he couldn’t be lost for long, right? At least, that was what he hoped. He started walking, looking around for something familiar. All trees, nothing standing out. Well nothing would stand out in a forest, would it. Still glancing around him nervously, Sam began to feel a little panicky. When he had entered the forest he hadn’t been paying too much attention, he didn’t know how long he’d been walking. He could be deep in the forest, and it might take him ages to get out. Alone in this place for that amount of time. The thought of that scared the young boy and forced him to walk a little faster. But speeding up didn’t help the feeling he was getting. It was silly really, how he could scare himself so effectively like this.
Speeding up more, Sam was almost at a jog by now, hurrying along, one hand clutching his satchel to keep it from knocking against his leg too much, the other moving at his side just like he was walking, but faster, It must look silly. But that didn’t matter, there was no-one here, hopefully. He was spending more time looking around for people now than he was looking where he was going, so it wasn’t surprising when he caught his leg on a fallen branch and tripped. He let out a small cry that was almost a squeak of surprise as he’d fallen. He felt embarrassed. Not just because he’d tripped but because his first thought as he went flying was ‘they’ve got me’. He’d been reading too many fantasy novels recently. He groaned to himself, he was being an idiot. He dusted himself off and sat there for a second to calm down, rushing was making things worse, there was nothing to panic about.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Bianca had woken up early today. It had been a slow morning for her and the day was still going by slow. She had done her normal routine in the morning like she always did. She woke up took her dog for a walk, cleaned the cats and ferrets litter box, ate breakfast, showered, got dressed and did her hair. She had chilled out for a couple of hours watching tv and spending some quality time with her pets. Now she was on her way out the door with her puppy Gypsy a German shepherd, husky mix. She figured she would head to the beach so Gypsy could run off some energy off the leash. She had her plain pink messenger bag with a couple toys, some treats, and a water bottle with a little bowl for Gypsy.
Sometimes Bianca would visit her cousin and siblings in the morning or later in the day. Today she hasn’t visited any of them so she might visit them later on in the day. Bianca head toward the beach that was at the academy; she knew it would be quite a walk but that was alright for her. Bianca was used to walking and enjoyed it, she liked being able to see the scenery at her own pace. Also if Gypsy needed to go to the bathroom she was free to. Bianca began to hum as she walked on the side walk toward the academy. She had made some friends and met some new people around but hadn’t made friends with them. She wondered if she would meet those people again. She always sees people more than once around here.
Though since she got here she hadn’t spent much time with her siblings that went here much less her family on the island that wasn’t too far from this one or the other island the regular humans lived on. It wasn’t because Bianca didn’t want to see them and she wasn’t really sure if she was just too busy to hang out with them. It was probably because she just didn’t feel like it, but that made her sound mean or selfish. Bianca was now going to make an effort to hang out with her family more. She actually missed it too.
Bianca came to the academy; the walk was faster than she thought it was. But she still had to walk through the forest to the beach. Bianca felt a breeze that made her hair go into her face. Her hair was in a pony tail but was still just a bit long enough to touch her face; she had also straightened it so it made it longer. Gypsy was doing fine though it seemed she had a lot of energy; which was a good thing. Gypsy would stop and sniff everything in sight; she would also roll in the grass. Bianca thought the little puppy was so cute.
Bianca walked to the forest; she really didn’t like the forest because people could be watching her and she didn’t like people watching her every move. But Bianca tried not to think about it. She didn’t get too far into the forest when she saw a boy on the ground, Bianca guessed he had been running and had tripped over a root. Bianca’s eye stretched wide, she hoped the boy wasn’t hurt. She walked closer to the stranger; just a bit closer. Bianca shortened Gypsy’s leash so she wouldn’t scare the boy. " “Hmm hello… I’m Bianca, are you okay?” Though Bianca knew she could be wrong and the boy could be on the ground for any kind of reason.

x Sitting there, cooling off and calming down, Sam wasn’t paying attention to what was around him, that was what had gotten him worked up to begin with. So he didn’t notice someone approach. His head was slightly down, looking at his shoes. To anyone looking at him he must look silly, sitting in the forest like this. He was controlling his breathing, in, out. Thinking about it made him more embarrassed; he had scared himself to the point where he was almost running away, and what was he running away from? A forest. A forest in which nothing strange was happening. He was being stupid. What if someone had in fact been watching him? What would they have seen? A small boy wandering through the forest, turning around suddenly and then speeding up until he was practically at a run. Then falling and just sitting there.
A voice spoke out from the forest, breaking him out of his trance. It was a female voice. But for a second it didn’t matter, someone HAD been watching him. At least that was what he thought for a second when he heard the voice. He looked up suddenly, seeing a girl stood there. At the same time, unable to fully control himself, he scrambled back just a little. His panic didn’t last long though, he stopped himself , and took a proper look at the girl stood before him. She was a bit older than him, she wasn’t very tall either, but still probably taller than Sam himself. She had a kind face, and not that his brain was working he relaised she had just asked if he was ok. She held something in her hand. A leash. At the end of it was a fairly fluffy looking dog. He couldn’t guess what breedd it was but it looked friendly.
Looking up at the girl, Sam managed a response. ”Um… yes, sorry. I’m alright. I was just… I tripped. I’m alright though. I’m Sam.” She had said her name was Bianca. Sam liked that name. Would it be weird if he told her that? Well things were a little weird already. He was sat in a forest being talked to by a girl with a dog. ”I like your name.” It did feel weird. But it had been said now, it was too late. It wasn’t that bad though, just a little more awkwardness.
It occurred to him after a second or two that he should probably stand up. More scrambling as he got to his feet. It wasn’t a graceful movement, and as he dusted himself off he felt quite foolish. Looking back at the Bianca, he wondered what she was doing out in the forest. Then immediately relaised how silly that was. She was probably out here to walk her dog. It was a nice, quiet place and dogs needed exercise. Sam wasn’t exactly thinking clearly today. He hoped this wasn’t a sign of how the rest of the day was going to go; stumbling over both branches and words. He only hoped this girl wouldn’t think him weird.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Bianca looked down at the boy, he didn’t look like he was hurt but she couldn’t be sure. Gypsy started to sniff the new person. Bianca pulled her away because she didn’t know if the boy liked dogs or not. She didn’t know why anyone wouldn’t like them, she could understand the whole being attacked by a dog thing but fearing all dogs to her was a bit unfair to the dogs. All dogs shouldn’t pay the price for one dog or really even the owner of said dog. Though that was how she saw it, that’s why she wasn’t afraid of men from what she been through. She couldn’t fear men from only a couple of guys. Not to mention she had a couple of guy friends and she still found some boys cute. So she couldn’t give up on them.
Bianca sat down on the ground in front of the boy and tilted her head to the side. She waited for the boy to answer her; she didn’t want to be rude. Bianca ignored the voices in her head that was letting her that the boy would hurt her. Bianca saw his reaction “Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you” she really didn’t mean to. The boy seemed a bit jumpy but she would have also if she had just tripped and then there was this person standing in front of her that seemed to have come out of nowhere. She saw him look at her dog Gypsy. “Oh this is Gypsy, my puppy. She’s friendly, she doesn’t bite or well not when she’s not playing that is” Bianca smiled warmly at the boy.
Bianca tilted her head to the side “Oh well I’m glad you’re alright. Forests can be tricky. With the roots of the trees and everything” Bianca looked around at all the trees and the roots. It was easy for anyone not paying attention to their footing to trip. Bianca started to blush when the boy said he liked her name. “Oh.. Thank you… I like your name too, is it a nickname?” Bianca liked nicknames; she gave them to all her friends and pets. Some of her friends called her B and she really liked that nickname. Her one cousin had a bunch of nicknames; she wished she had as many. She thought that if someone gave you a nickname it means you were close to each other.
Gypsy started to roll in the grass and leaves, and then she went to pouncing on leaves. Bianca smiled at her playful puppy; she loved her to death as much as her other pets. Bianca saw Sam stand up and did the same. She stood up more graceful than the boy but she didn’t think anything of it. She brushed off the dirt that was on her bum from sitting on the floor. She looked at the boy in silence feeling awkward from it. Bianca had an idea “Hey! If you want, if you like didn’t have anywhere else to go or anything, would you like to walk to the beach with me? I was heading there so Gypsy here could play in the water and stuff, she loves the water.” Bianca took a deep breath and released it; she had talked without taking a breath, so it was a long run on sentence. She stood there and waited for the boy to answer her. Bianca was nowhere near to being shy, well sometimes she was, but she was outgoing enough to be able to talk to strangers like this.

x Sam hadn’t expected the girl to sit down next to him, so he felt a little foolish when he stood up and made her get up again too. But he would have felt silly just sitting there on the ground while he was talking to her. Now that they were both stood he noticed the height difference between them. Sam was used to this, he was short by most standards, even among people his own age. Looking straight forward Sam would be staring into her mouth. Looking up a little at her face he saw she had brown eyes, and was really quite pretty. He smiled, she seemed friendly. Was he spending too long looking into her eyes? Was that weird? He was happy for a reason to turn away; when she told him her dog’s name. He bent down for a moment where the dog was playing. She looked lovely and Sam couldn’t help but smile. He held out a hand gently, letting the dog sniff it before stroking her for a second.
Looking back up at Bianca, Sam gave a little smile. She liked his name too. Sam never thought of his name as anything special. It was just… well, his name. It wasn’t unique or different really, there were planty of other people called Sam. Was he blushing a little? Come to think of it, was she? She did look a little redder around the cheeks. ”Um… I guess it’s sort of a nickname. My name is Samuel. So it’s just sort of… shorter… It’s nothing special.” Sam wondered if the girl had any nicknames. How do you shorten Bianca? Nicknames are better if they’re different from your real name, usually. Unless it’s people trying to be funny or making fun of you. That happened to Sam more often.
Sam hadn’t been planning on doing anything when he got out of the forest; he’d just been killing time. He didn’t have anything else to do really. That was one of the reasons that he’d come into the forest in the first place. That and he wanted a bit of time alone. That was unusual for him, but not completely unknown. He was strange in that he liked to be by himself, but have people around. Sam hadn’t expected Bianca to invite him to come with her to the beach. He stood for a second, unsure how to answer her. It would be nice, but… Sam didn’t know any reason not to it just made him a little nervous, going along with a complete stranger. Not that he thought anything would happen. He just had an odd feeling. But that was probably just him.
Realising that he hadn’t answered yet, Sam looked back up at the girl, standing up again properly as he did so. ”Sorry… That could be fun, thank you, I’d love to come. I bet Gypsy will have a good time too.” He smiled at her again. He didn’t have anything better to do. And it’s not like anything bad was going to happen. He would just have to learn to ignore those weird feelings he got.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Bianca saw the boy start to stand up and she stood as well. She didn’t mind it so much; it actually gave her something to do. She didn’t have ADHD but she was just the kind of person to want to keep moving. Some of her friends like this about her and others don’t because they just want to relax and do things their own time. Bianca when it comes to hanging out with friends she tries to have everything planned out so they didn’t get stuck being or have nothing else to do. Other than that this girl isn’t one for planning things unless its birthday parties but her cousin usually plans them. Bianca was surprised to see the boy smaller than her. It was kind of weird for her to be looking down at a boy even if it wasn’t much. It was a new thing for her to look down at a guy but she guess she would get used to it. She isn’t the type to care about physical appearance.
Bianca held the boy’s gaze; a lot of people tend to make eye contact with her. So she was pretty used to it; though sometimes she felt weird especially when strange old men that she doesn’t know at all make eye contact with her. She smiled as she watched the boy pet her dog, Gypsy had let him pet her and even licked his hand when she sniffed him. Bianca giggled “She likes to lick people.” Gypsy did actually like to lick people because she licked anyone’s hand that went toward her muzzle. The boy’s name was fairly simple and really common, but the way she saw it was it isn’t the person’s name you chose to remember that person by but their personality. Same goes with weather they become you friend or enemy. “Oh that’s so cool; Samuel is a really cool name. Friends tend to call me B” Though friends also called her Angel; their reason was because she acted like an Angel. Her parents called her sweetheart but none of her friends did and she thought that would be pretty weird if they did. Bianca saw nicknames as anything people called you different from your name. Though she thought it was more special if people called you something that wasn’t you name or a shorten version of your name.
Bianca clapped her hands softly and smiled. “Yay! Okay let’s go!” Bianca should have put on her bathing suit since she was going to the beach. But she didn’t think about it and she had gypsy so she wouldn’t be able to swim in the water anyway. Also she didn’t mind getting her outfit getting a bit wet. Bianca took the lead and started walking to the beach. “Oh hey, how long have you been attending the school?” She was curious because she was wondering how well he would know the island and the other island. She had been her since she first shifted so that would be three years; so she knew both islands fairly well. She wouldn’t mind showing Sam around if he was now to the school. She thought it would be pretty fun to show someone around the school.

x Samuel smiled again as he watched Bianca’s dog play around. She was a lovely little dog. Sam had never owned a dog himself, or rather his family hadn’t. They had never had the time really. But a couple of his relatives had at one time or another owned a dog. ”My uncle has dog. He is really big and jumps up at you when you go into the house. He knocked me over once. But he’s only being friendly. My cousin has a dog too but he’s scared of most people because of his first owner. He is still nice though. He’s big as well, he’s more than half as tall as me. It’s a good thing he doesn’t jump up too.” Sam didn’t normally talk this freely just after meeting someone, but he liked Bianca already. She had a kind face. He felt quite secure around her, but he didn’t know whether that had anything to do with the relief he was feeling. He wasn’t alone anymore, and all of his fears of being watched by some sinister creature were proved false. The person who he had encountered here was actually really nice. Even though they were going to have to go back through the forest in pretty much the opposite direction to the way he had been going, which he hoped was towards the academy. Come to think of it, Bianca hadn’t come from that direction, she had approached from slightly off to the side. Had she come from the academy? Did they allow pets?
Samuel had never thought his name was anything special. It was easy to shorten, and so he was usually called Sam by everyone. So he had very few unique nicknames. One f his older cousins called him Sammy sometimes, but other than that he only got nicknames from people who were making fun of him. A couple of his other cousins had invented a few mouse-related nicknames when they had found out what his shift was. He barely ever saw them though, so it wasn’t that bad. They didn’t go to the academy. Sam wasn’t sure why, but he was actually glad they weren’t here. Sam was the quietest of his relatives, and was often the victim of his cousin’s pranks. Well, unless one of his cousins was around. He had two younger cousins and one of them was the only person who the others would target above Sam himself. But Sam didn’t see his relatives very often anymore. He liked that Bianca thought his name was cool. He never thought it was a very individual name personally. He had gone to school with two other boys called Sam. ”Oh, thank you. I always thought Samuel was a bit of a… well, sort of a boring name. Kinda.” He smiled at her though, it was nice of her to compliment him like that. Maybe she was just being nice. She seemed like the kind of person who would say things like that to help people feel better about themselves. Not that he thought she would lie to people, but just that she would try to make things sound better than people thought.
Sam didn’t move immediately when Bianca said lets go. Mainly because he didn’t know which way the beach was. He decided it would be best to wait for her to set off again and then follow on. It was a safe bet that it was in the direction Bianca had been facing though. How long had Sam been at the academy now? Not long. He had arrived just a short while after he turned thirteen. It had been a few months now. ”Um… I’ve been here about three months… maybe four… Something like that. Not too long. I still get lost sometimes. It’s just so different here to being at home. I didn’t even know about shifting before my thirteenth birthday. I guess thirteen is sort of unlucky really.” He didn’t know what had made him say that. A lot of stuff had changed for him since then. He had found out about shifting and had to leave his family and friends and learn to live here, so far away from everyone. It had been a huge change to his life. ”How long have you been here?” He was hoping his question would cover up what he had said. It would be a bit of an awkward topic to get on to so soon after meeting a person. But then Sam had never spoken to anyone about how he felt about moving here. He wasn’t sure that was something he wanted to discuss with a stranger though. Even if Bianca had a kind look about her.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Bianca listened intently as Sam explained his relative’s pets. She smiled as she listened “They sound so cute. Gypsy will probably be a big dog… But big dogs are just as cute as small ones. But that’s sad that your cousin’s dog is scared of people.” She hated people who neglected their pets. Bianca saw the whole pet thing as humans being animals guardians; to take care of the ones who need to be taken care of. Not it being animals were there for humans entertainment. Being a shifter also made it to where human and animals came closer to each other. Though she didn’t really want to think of how shifters first came to be. If anything being a shifter would make humans respect animals more than they did before they turned thirteen or whatever age they first shifted. Though for humans to truly respect animals Bianca figured we would have to have their life. Meaning if you can turn into a cat live a year being someone’s pet or even living on the streets as a cat. But growing up as humans would make this process a bit harder than it is. Because they already had the human’s habits; though Bianca doubted that animals and humans habits weren’t very different from one another.
Bianca liked simple names, though she liked the ones that were unique a bit more. Bianca looked at him and smiled “I don’t think it’s the name that people have to worry about. You are most known for your personality and the things you do. People also remember you by your face not your name. If I had a dollar for every time I recognized someone but didn’t know what their name was or didn’t recognize the name when I’m sure I would have recognized the person’s face I would have enough money to by myself a wii” Most people knew the face but didn’t know the name. You remember the face first and then remember the name; or you know the person because of the face and just remembered their name. But maybe it wasn’t that simple. She didn’t get why people made such a big deal about ones name, of course she would want her child to have a pretty name but you should be honored to have parents that would even take the time to name you. Not that Bianca was saying Sam didn’t like his name but to her it was pretty easy to remember and she liked that. “Don’t worry about it being boring, I think every name is boring in its own way. Not to mention it’s different for each person; someone may hate the name while others like the name. It all has to do with the eye of the beholder…. I think that’s how that quote goes..”
Bianca walked on toward the beach. She hadn’t been there in a week. It was weird for her to not be at the beach at least once a week. But she hadn’t felt like going to the beach the past week. Then again none of her friends wanted to go with her and she didn’t want to go by herself. But this morning she really wanted to go so she did but she brought along Gypsy. Thankfully she wouldn’t be going alone, because she had bumped into Sam. “Yeah it takes a while to get used to… Don’t worry it will get better in time. So let’s be friends! It’s easier you know. To have someone there to make you happy when you’re feeling sad; at least for me it is. I didn’t like it when I first came to this academy; none of my friends from middle school came here. I felt really lonely, but thankfully I had my siblings and cousins that helped me through it.” Bianca didn’t mind telling her point of view on anything to a stranger. She felt it made them more comfortable to talk. So if they did need someone to talk to at the time they could feel more comfortable opening up. “I lived in Hawaii since I was about twelve I think… I have been going to the academy for about two years now. So if you need a tour or anything just let me know! “ Her parents had told her about the shifting thing. But that was because her older brother Yuuki had shifted and her parents told both of them about it.

Looking at Gypsy, Sam found it hard to imagine her as being very big. She looked too cute. Not that big dogs weren’t cute, but it was a different sort of cute. Then again, a lot of animals started out tiny and cute but grew a lot, like tigers or lions. Maybe that would happen to him someday. He was tiny now, but maybe he would suddenly grow. He had heard of it happening to other people, so why shouldn’t it happen to him? He supposed he didn’t mind being small, but it would be nice to look over people’s heads for a change instead of gazing up at them. Even someone like Bianca, who most people would consider small, was a good deal taller than Sam was. ”That’ll be nice for Gypsy. I bet she’ll look beautiful when she’s fully grown. Maybe the same thing will happen to me… I mean… The growing, not getting beautiful… you know… right?” He messed up that sentence. He might even be blushing a little… yet again. He stared straight forward, hoping he wasn’t too red, hoping Bianca wouldn’t notice.
As they moved through the trees Sam wondered why he was doing this. Sure, Bianca was nice, but he was already making himself uncomfortable, that was likely to continue. He just couldn’t get his words out like he wanted to; they sounded fine in his head then got all mixed up on the way out. Looking up at Bianca again, Sam couldn’t help but admire the way she saw people. It was true that most people, Sam included, recognized people more for their personality than their name or their face. But to Sam the name was a way of identifying a person. He often ended up associating names with a certain personality because of someone he knew by that name. If things continued the way they were going Sam would think of a nice, kind person whenever he heard the name Bianca. He smiled at her when she talked about getting a dollar for every forgotten name. He would probably have a god deal of money himself if he got a dollar for every time he remembered someone’s personality but not their name. ”I don’t think your name is boring at all.” He said, nearly making himself blush again. Was it that hard for him to compliment someone casually? Pushing on, Sam ignored the feeling of hotness coming back to his cheeks. ”You’re right though, some people do like names other people don’t… I mean, your parents have to like the name they give you, right? I don’t mean like… only they’ll like it… I just mean that if they like it other people will too… sorry. I’m not making any sense.” There it was again, something that was fine in his head but came out of his mouth an unclear muddle.
Sam had never been to the beach before. He had never had the courage to walk very far into the forest before, or the time to walk around it, and anyway, he was doing other things. It was somewhere he’d wanted to see though. He hadn’t been to very many beaches. It was amazing how the land just disappeared and there was nothing but water all the way to the horizon. He was glad he was going with someone, especially someone nice like Bianca. He grew happier still when Bianca said they should be friends. He looked up slightly into her eyes, beaming. ”Really? T hat would be wonderful. I don’t really have any friends yet. You’ll be my first here. I had to leave all of my friends too. But it would be great if you’d be my friend.” He wasn’t used to anyone being this nice to him this soon after meeting him. It had happened before, but never when he was on his own and never by someone anywhere near his own age. It was normally adults he met for a short time. Thinking for a moment, Sam spoke up again, remembering something Bianca had said earlier. ”Does this I can call you B?” He liked having nicknames for people, especially if they gave him one too. He didn’t often get them, since Sam was such a short name, but it had been known. He was happy either way, especially since he had a new friend. He was glad to have someone to help him and show him around though, Maybe she would be able to show him around more, maybe even around the other island if she’d lived here for two years. ”It would be great if you would show me around some time. Thank you so much. You’re such a nice person.” Sam would have to think of some way to repay her, some kind of thank you. Maybe he could get her a present.
Continuing on through the trees, Sam took a moment to look around. Nothing had changed, but it felt completely different. He wasn’t afraid of someone spying on him or jumping out at him. He had someone here now; his new friend Bianca. She made him feel more secure, even though they had only just met. That wasn’t weird was it? He hoped not. It was just that he had someone around now, so he wasn’t alone. Was that really strange? Bianca seemed fine, not scared at all. ”Do you come here much? Do you bring Gypsy with you? Or have you been here on your own? Sorry… I should ask one question at a time.” Sam didn’t mean to pile a bunch of questions on her at once, he just thought of them one after another. He hoped she wouldn’t mind.
