December 24th, 6:47 P.M. Dymetri clacked at his computer, discussing with another student on the web-site chat. Dymetri wasn’t fully there when his best friend signed on. Zander, he was talking, he was online. The boy was in panic, clearly. Dymetri questioned and got a panicked answer. And soon his friend was “disconnected”. Dymetri didn’t bother changing out of his pajamas before heading towards the door. His room-mate, Choi, stopped him and questioned him. Dymetri gave a simple answer “Rescue mission.” before leaving. Dymetri didn’t usually run but, at this point he ran as fast as his small legs could carry him. His bare feet pounded against the floor as he mad his way out of the building and down to the docks. He just missed it. The kitten inside growled at the fact that Dymetri decided to swim for it. His liquid silver eyes stared down at the water. Dymetri sucked in a deep breath before diving into the frigid waters. His bones ached but, he kept swimming with a fast speed. The adrenaline pumping through his body. The kitten growled and snarled, begging to get out. Those heeds soon ended as he pulled himself onto the ferry, now hoping it’d bounce through the choppy waters faster. Dymetri closed his eyes and tipped his head back, panting. His wet clothes stuck to his body in some places and others not. He had no clue how he was going to get to Colorado. Plane? No, no money. Train? Same problem. Fuck it, he’d walk if he had to. Dymetri decided that it might be best to stop by Toby’s. The ferry docked with a thud, pulling Dymetri from his thoughts. Dymetri barely thought once before darting off the boat and down the slick dock. Left, right, left, right. He stopped, his frozen feet cut with rocks and filled with filth. He pounded on the door, soon answered by a tall blonde boy. ”Dymetri?” the boy asked, confused.
Dymetri explained that he had to get to Colorado, fast! Toby gave him a change of clothes and agreed to give him some money for a plane ticket there and two back. Dymetri didn’t stick around long after that. He borrowed a pair of Toby’s shoes and got a lift to the airport. Dymetri just barely made the last flight directly to Colorado. Luckily for Dymetri, Zander lived in a town where everyone knew everyone and Dymetri was quickly able to locate Zander’s home. Dymetri stopped and stared at the door for a long time. Dym was brought back to reality when he heard a crash inside the house. He panicked, not knowing what to do. He banged on the door. No answer, the crashing still going on. He continued to bang, and the door was pulled open with great force. Dymetri came face to face with the craziest thing he has seen in his life. The small frame of a women with crazy eyes staring at him. Dymetri jumped back before stuttering. ”I-is Z-zander here?” The women’s face was wide and crazy. She let out a loud cackle that shook Dymetri’s bones. ”So you’re the rescue team Zander’s been crying on about?” her voice filled Dymetri’s body with fear. The fear was transferred to courage as he heard Zander’s whimper in the background. Dymetri’s eyes turned a fierce green and he straightened up, walking straight up to the woman.
”Yeah, I am!” Dymetri snarled pushing past the woman The woman, looking frail, was strong enough to stop him. She gripped his arm and twisted it behind his back. Dymetri whimpered and heard an audible crack in his arm. Pain seared through his bone and he let out a painful scream. Surely loud enough to let the neighbors something was going on. A hand quickly stopped the yelled by clapping over his mouth. He felt his small body being pulled into the house. His head bashed against the couch frame as he landed next to Zander, whimpering. Dymetri looked over at his best friend, hearing him whisper ”Dymetri?” ‘bout nearly shattered Dymetri’s heart. ”Shut up you, imbecile.” his mother’s wicked voice hit Dymetri’s ear, ‘causing him to wince. Dymetri let out a small gasp when his friend was hit with a large plank of wood. That’s what he made it out to be, his night eyes kicking in in the dark. ”You too!” she shouted, smacking Dymetri in the head. The pain distracted from the pain in his arm. Dymetri couldn’t really tell which direction was up. His body was spinning and he felt the floor beneath him. His mind was fading to black and that’s when he heard the crack of his friend’s ribs. He heard his friend’s scream of pain turn to the howl of a wolf. Dymetri struggled through the darkness to find the light. He couldn’t let his friend shift and hurt anyone. He knew that wasn’t Zander’s nature. Dymetri’s brain faded back to life as the sound of sirens came around front.
”C’mon Zander, I can’t let the cops find you like this.” Dymetri whispered as Zander’s mother went to answer the banging of the door. Dymetri picked up the injured red fox into his good arm and limped out the back door. He felt the blood falling down his face from the wound on his head. Dymetri held the fox in the back, behind a bush until the cops left, arresting Zander’s mom. She was convicted with child abuse from the blood on the plank of wood.
Dymetri waited until the cops were all cleared out before carrying the fox back inside. He rested Zander on a bed and covered the unconscious fox with a blanket. Dymetri sat and watched the fox until he shifted back. Dymetri made sure the now naked boy had everything he needed before signing onto the school site from a computer in the room they were in. And Maddie was online, thankfully. Dymetri asked a few questions about broken ribs before signing off. Dymetri helped Zander put on some clothes with the only arm he could use. He then cleaned himself and Zander off before, helping the boy to the buses. He was going to take Zander on a plane, and then to the academy. It was the safest idea in case Zander shifted in front of a bunch of human doctors. He explained everything to the nurses once at the school. He refused to leave Zander alone until he knew Zander was safe. It was only when Zander was asleep and safe in a bed that he let them tend to his arm and head. Dymetri got a cast for his arm and was fast asleep in his own bed.
