because a dance with the devil might last you forever - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - “See, at least there's a positive thing about warm weather. You can go swimming in the ocean and not freeze once you get out.” Jake agreed with that. It was the one flaw when he lived in Alaska. He could go swimming unless he wanted to freeze his ass off in the process in and out of the water. That was the nice thing about Hawaii. He didn’t have to worry about that. “I agree. That was the one flaw when I lived in Alaska.”
“A falcon. That's why I couldn't shift in the water. I really don't have a death wish, especially by drowning.” Jake laughed at that and leaned his back against the tree trunk. He was sitting on the branch opposite of Gabe and one of his legs dangled above the ground. The dangling leg swung back and forth in a slow but soothing movement. He probed his other leg up and rested his arm against his knee. “That’s a cool shift. Maybe that’s a good thing. I don’t think I could do CPR as a wolf.”
Jake listened as Gabe talked. It made sense now that Gabe put it that way. It was like how some people hated things and others don’t. Like how Jake hated hot weather but he was forced to live in it because of who he was. It was the same principal. They hated to shift but had to sometimes because it was who they were. Jake nodded thinking over this. “That makes sense when you put it that way. It’s like how I hate something when someone else might love it.”
To hate your shift is like to hating yourself. The animal is a part of you. So far Jake had found out that he had a personality of a wolf. Shi had the personality of a cat. Shinya the personality of a polar bear. “Hating your animal would almost be like hating yourself. The animal is you in a sense. So that would mean you hate part of yourself. I dunno, I’m just thinking out loud.” Jake mused on the topic. He looked back over the water and wondering what time it was. It couldn’t be too late right? Jake watched the water roll into the sand and then roll back out. Almost like the water was running away from the one friend it had. Jake turned his attention back to Gabe. “You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to. But do you like your shift?” - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [/blockquote] "Talking" "Other character"418WORDSGabe TAGGEDFirst post on the first page OUTFITtemplate by LISA@GBBS, lyrics by immortal technique CREDITHope it's alright NOTES [/blockquote]

”I like to travel and see other places, so I guess I would just adapt to wherever I'm at at the time.” Of course he didn't like extremely cold weather and he didn't like when it was extremely hot, even though could put on or take off clothes accordingly. Of course he hasn't seen that many places, but one of these days he would go and visit places he's never been. Gabriel carefully propped his legs up on the branch and laid his head up against the trunk of the tree. He would take a nap up there if he wasn't afraid that he would fall off and break his neck during it.
”Well that would be another awesome thing...seeing a wolf do CPR. But I have to say I wouldn't want to be the one it's doing it on.” That would be gross and weird. At least now he knew who to bring along if he ever wanted to try something stupid where someone might need to perform CPR on him. Gabe nodded as he finally seemed to understand what he was saying. ”Yeah, exactly.” But he also agreed with him when he said that hating your animal shift was like hating yourself. After all, it was a part of you. Even if you didn't like to shift, it wouldn't stop you from having that animal part of yourself.
”I guess that's true. It would be like hating a part of yourself. But there are other situations where people don't like parts of themselves either. Like if they get jealous easy, that might be something they don't like about themselves, you know?” And jealousy was a hard thing to get rid of, no matter how much you want to. ”Yeah, I do,” he answered, turning his head to look at him. ”I don't shift very often, but I really have no reason to not like my shift. I know some people have said it's hard having a shift, because obviously it means you're not like regular human beings. But I don't see it that way, since you get to choose when you shift and when you don't.”
Besides, that was debatable, as “regular” for him was humans who could shift. ”You want to head back and get our stuff?” Without waiting for an answer, he shifted on the branch until he could slide over the edge and land on the ground safely.

Jake nodded listening to Gabe. Everything he said was true. Jake didn’t necessarily hate a part of himself but he did get annoyed with himself sometimes. He hated how easily he could get mad and when he does get mad or upset, he hates it when he talks to the people. It wasn’t something he could help. It was just who he was and what he did. At least someone else likes their shift,
Jake thought as Gabe spoke about his shift. “It’s a good thing that you like your shift and you like to shift. I obviously like to shift,” Jake smiled as he remembered the first time he shifted by himself back in Alaska. It was the time he hunted the first time as a wolf. “You want to head back and get our stuff?” Gabe slid down from the tree leaving Jake up in the tree. Unlike Gabe, Jake was actually going to jump down from it. He crouched down on the three branch and jumped from it. He landed swiftly on his bare feet ignoring the pain from the forest floor in his feet. “I forgot out things were on the beach.” Jake admitted as they walked on the beach. Jake looked down at the sand seeing his paw prints in the sand next to Gabe’s feet prints. Someone could think a man had been running from a wolf and been hunted down. Maybe he should get rid of the paw prints. But then he decided not to. The paw prints looked like dog prints and that wouldn’t be a problem. Someone would just think it was a dog and his man. They walked in silence until Jake spotted his shoes and sunglasses and then Gabe’s bag. “There’s our stuff.” Jake pointed to where everything was and stuffed his hands in his pockets. After a couple more minutes of walking, Jake stopped and picked up his sunglasses, placing them on top of his head while he slid into his flip flops. He turned so he was facing the ocean. It was really cool. The sun was starting to set so the sky was turning different shades of orange, yellow, pinks, and purples. Jake let himself smile slightly at the site of the sunset. He glanced around and saw that a couple other people were here. Jake turned back to Gabe. “Do you wonna go back or stay here? I’m cool with either.” - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [/blockquote] "Talking" "Other character"406 WORDSGabe TAGGEDFirst post, first page OUTFITtemplate by LISA@GBBS, lyrics by immortal technique CREDITSorry it's short NOTES [/blockquote]

”Yeah, I figured you did since you shifted back there. That's why I didn't ask you if you liked your own shift.” How many people wouldn't like to be a wolf shift? Although he guessed most people liked their shift, but he didn't understand the purpose of them, really. It wasn't like there was a big raging war where they had to know how to use their shifts for it. They weren't actually secret agents or anything cool like that. Just people who knew how to shift into animals, which most of the time turned out to only be for fun.
”I almost did too. But I'm glad I remembered, because I don't like leaving my things outside where people might steal them.” And they just might if the stuff was worth stealing. He didn't know many people who would actually turn things into the lost and found, but would keep it instead. He took his shoes up to where the grass was at and sat down to put them on. The ground was cool on his skin, but it felt good nevertheless. Gabriel wanted to camp out one night. With a tent and everything. He wondered if that was possible. Maybe Pinky would like to do that with him one night. He didn't know if she liked that sort of thing, but at the moment that was the only person he really felt like spending long amounts of time with.
Or maybe Dymetri, but yet again he didn't know if he liked that type of thing either. Though maybe he could charm one of them into doing it just for him; just because he wanted to do it, but he didn't really want to do it by himself. But if not, he could always camp out by himself and roast marshmallows. Gabriel also looked out at the sunset. It was nice out, but it was also getting dark. Not that he was afraid of it or anything. He shrugged at Jake's question, unsure of whether he wanted to stay or go. ”I suppose we can start heading back,” he said, getting off the grass and picking up his bag. He still hadn't managed to shift that day, but he figured he could try again in the morning.
He took a look around at some of the people who had gathered on the beach and then lead the way back towards the school. Although he would eventually have to head back to the University or, perhaps he could make a surprise visit to Pinky if she was in. ”So tell me about yourself. Are you dating someone? Secretly married? Have lots of kids?” he continued to joke, although it was possible either way.

Jake waited for Gabe to put his shoes on and grab his backpack. Once they were on, he started walking on the beach. One thing he didn’t like about walking on the beach in flip flops was the sand would slide under his foot onto his shoe. It would rub against his foot and when the sand was hot; it would hurt and burn the bottom of his feet. Like the rest of Jake, his feet weren’t made for hot weather. Jake stuffed his hands in the pockets of his khaki shorts and walked along with Gabe. They walked in silence until Gabe spoke. “So tell me about yourself. Are you dating someone? Secretly married? Have lots of kids?”
He was taken aback by the question that he almost stopped. Did he look like he had a lot of kids? He was only eighteen! He was a legal adult but he was no means ready to have any kids of any kind. Jake shook his head and laughed to try and cover up his shock. Smooth real smooth, Jake thought. “No girlfriend, no wife, and no, I don’t have any kids. Hell I’m only eighteen.” Jake answered. “But then again, that hasn’t stopped some people from having kids at sixteen.” Jake shrugged his shoulders as they walked through the woods. “What about you? Kids? Girlfriend? Wife? Or boyfriend or husband depending on which gender you preferred.” Jake asked Gabe. The topic of being married brought up the thoughts about his brother Michael who maybe had a girlfriend of his own. He wasn’t sure. He hadn’t checked his email for his family in a couple of days. He had two different emails. One for family and friends from Alaska and then the one the academy required him to have. He had come up with the email name himself. He thought it was pretty funny. jakeishere. Who didn’t think that was funny? Jake knows he did. Jake didn’t wait for Gabe to answer the question before asking another one. “You go the university right? I’m going to be there next year.” Jake said and he was right. He was going to be at the university next year because this was his senior year. He had heard he could stay here for the summer but he wasn’t sure what he was going to do. He’d probably go back considering he’d live here for nine months of the year. He hoped the university wasn’t bad. He figured he’d be with a bunch of kids who either cared what they did or didn’t. Well, that’s what ever school was like. Some of the kids cared while others didn’t. Jake hoped he wouldn’t fall into the “doesn’t care” category. He wasn’t sure which Gabe fell under but he didn’t care. Each to his own. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [/blockquote] "Talking" "Other character"468 WORDSGabe TAGGEDFirst page, first post OUTFITtemplate by LISA@GBBS, lyrics by immortal technique CREDITHope it's alright :] NOTES [/blockquote]

The questions he asked were purely meant to be funny. Well, he was a bit curious. It was surprising what you could find out about people – surprising stuff. For instance someone who has been in jail before, but by looking at them you wouldn't be able to tell. Looks could be deceiving. Gabriel laughed and shrugged. ”I didn't really think you were married or had any kids. I just thought it would be funny to see how you reacted to it.” He lightly kicked at the sand as they walked. ”So you really don't have a girlfriend?” He didn't know why this surprised him – not that everyone needed to be dating someone.
”I guess that's true. Though I'm not sure how anybody can take care of kids at that age.” Though usually they didn't. Usually they had to have help from their family members. It reminded him of that show that came on television, about the sixteen year old mothers. Not that he watched it; he absolutely could not stand it. Gabriel shook his head at his own questions. ”No, I'm not dating anyone and I'm not married. And I definitely don't have any kids.” It was not cheap living on the island and he stayed in an apartment. Rent was a high amount on the island and he was only working a part time job. So he couldn't afford to take care of even one child.
”Yeah, I do. I'm a Sophomore at the University. I'm going for Vocal music. What are you majoring in?” Gabriel didn't tell many people about the old band he had been in and what had happened between them. He figured a lot of people would think bad of him if they knew, but he probably shouldn't care about that. He was slowly working on his drinking problem, but he knew people who were worse off than he was. Gabriel took the initiative to start leading the way back to the school, since there wasn't much more for them to do on the beach itself.
”Do you ever get tired of spending so much time on this island?” he asked, glancing over at him. Gabriel knew he did, but he had been there for years. ”I almost didn't want to go to the University here. After spending all the years at the Academy, it can get boring. Even with the other island to visit.” And he couldn't really go to his parents house and spend the summer there. He could only visit for maybe a week. That was one of the downsides to growing up.

Jake shook his head. Gabe sounded almost surprised that he didn’t have a girlfriend. He wasn’t sure why. Jake had never really given the idea of dating a thought. He just knew it wasn’t for him at this point in time. He needed to be free of any commitments at the moment. He just wasn’t at a stage in his life where he was ready for a girlfriend. “Nope no girlfriend. I’m not really sure to be honest. I haven’t really thought about it. I guess I’m not really ready for one. Ya know what I mean?”
It kind of surprised Jake that Gabe didn’t have a girlfriend. He almost seemed like he would have a girlfriend. His personality almost screamed I have a girlfriend! “Really? Huh, I woulda thought you’d have one.”
Jake kicked some sand out of his flip flop once they hit the grass. He liked the feeling of the sand on his bare feet when he wasn’t wearing shoes. However, when he wears any sort of foot device, he hates the feeling of sand in his foot covering. It went with anything; grass; dirt; sticks; rocks; etcetera etcetera. It was irritating and it bothered him. When he shifted, that was different. He didn’t mind the feel of everything on the bottom of his paws. He wasn’t sure why but it was just like that. ”Yeah, I do. I'm a Sophomore at the University. I'm going for Vocal music. What are you majoring in?”
“That’s cool. I’m a senior at the Academy so I’ll be coming to the University next year. I’m majoring in science. Zoology to be more specific. He loved science but wasn’t entirely sure why he went into Zoology. He did love to be around people so maybe that was why. He’d be able to work with animals all day long and be around them.
“Do you ever get tired of spending so much time on this island? I almost didn't want to go to the University here. After spending all the years at the Academy, it can get boring. Even with the other island to visit.”
Jake thought over this. He hadn’t been on the island very long so he really couldn’t comment on that. It was somewhat nice seeing something other than white, blue, green, and brown. He did miss t he cold and he wouldn’t miss the heat when he went back home for summer break. In fact, he was looking forward to that. He’d get to see his family again. “I’ve only been here for about a month so I can’t really comment on that; but, I know I miss Alaska. How long were you here before you were in the University?” - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [/blockquote] "Talking" "Other character"452 WORDSGabe TAGGEDAbove OUTFITtemplate by LISA@GBBS, lyrics by immortal technique CREDITHere's my post. Gabriel nodded when he said he wasn't sure he was ready for one. ”That's understandable. They can be a handful sometimes, that's for sure. Plus you have to make a lot of time for most of them.” And you had to spend money on them sometime or another. Especially if you were a guy that felt like they needed to buy their girlfriend or boyfriend something every now and again and you felt like you should pay for dates, or some of them. Gabe, on the other hand, wouldn't mind having a girlfriend. But he didn't feel like he had to have one. He wasn't like the people that felt like their life would end if they weren't dating someone.
On the other hand, Jake was still at the Academy. Gabriel was a Sophomore at the University. He was 21 years old. It was a good time in his life to have a girlfriend, but he didn't know what he was going to do when he got out of the University. ”Well I recently had some major problems in my life and couldn't deal with really dating anyone at the time. Before that I was busy with my old band.” And drinking a lot. He figured it was best to leave that part out. ”Science, huh? That's pretty cool. What do you do in Zoology?” He didn't really know anything about the subject. He probably should, but he was a bit uneducated when it came to the majority of other majors.
”You have any clue where you're going to go once you graduate from the University?” He still wasn't sure what he wanted to do. He could stay on the island or move away. It probably would depend on if he got a girlfriend and it got serious. And by serious, he meant that it lasted over several months. If he joined another band and it actually got somewhere, he guessed having a place on the island wouldn't be that bad, since he wouldn't be there all the time like he was now. ”So you didn't come here when you first shifted?” he asked curiously. Well that was interesting.
Gabriel kicked a rock that he found on the ground, trying to get it to roll further away each time. Eventually it just became a pain to keep it going, so he stopped kicking it as they continued to walk back towards the school. ”I've been here since I shifted and trust me, that is a very long time. Especially when the days go by really slow sometimes. Having a girlfriend to keep up with would be a nice change.” He was a responsible person, even though he didn't look like it. Sure, sometimes he made bad decisions, like going to a party when he shouldn't. Getting drunk when he knew he might miss classes or go into work late. But that was happening less now that he was working on not drinking as much. Or at least not drinking so much that he got drunk.

Jake felt the twigs and grass brush across his shoes. He didn’t do anything about it because it didn’t bother him as long as it wasn’t under his foot. Jake listened to Gabe talk about dating. It was true, girls were expensive. He never had a girlfriend but his brother did and it took up all his time. Emma had one too. Maybe she still has one, he couldn’t remember, he hadn’t talked to Emma in a while. He had never wanted a girlfriend and he still doesn’t. It’ll come in time though. He just has to meet that girl. “You were in a band? That’s awesome.”
Zoology was pretty cool. He got to spend all day with animals and around people. “I’m going to study the behavior, structure, physiology, classification, and distribution of animals. I’m mainly going to study the behavior of animals. I’ll get to be around them all day. I don’t do very well on my own,” Jake laughed stuffing his hands in his pockets. “I’ll probably end up going back to Alaska and working for the wide life people out there. Studying the animals out there. I’d love to study wolves more. Do you know what you’re going to do?” The awesome thing about Jake’s major was that he was a wolf shift. If he studied wolves, he could just shift and communicate with them that way. It might be cheating, no it was cheating but who cares? He’d get answers no one would be able to get. “No I didn’t. My dad and sister are shifters so they were able to help me at first. I was going to go into the military but I can’t for now. I might after the University and everything. I’m not sure. I don’t know if my dad would want me to go into the military anymore. I still want to though.” Jake had never told anyone that mainly because he had no else to talk to about it. Back home at least. Shi never asked about coming to the Academy or what’d he do afterwards. Gabe was the very first person. ”I've been here since I shifted and trust me, that is a very long time. They weren't too far from the school now, but he wasn't sure what would be done when they got back up there. After all, he went to the University, so he had no real need to be at the school. And his apartment was in a different direction. He figured they could part ways at the school, though and that would be good enough for the two of them. ”Yeah, for awhile. Almost had a record deal.” But that was really as far as he wanted to get into it, because he just didn't want to bring up details as to why it happened. So he supposed if Jake asked him, he would just have to tell him that he didn't want to talk about it. But perhaps he'll just look over it and not ask at all. That would be a great idea. ”That's a lot of big words,” he told him, thinking them over. ”That sounds like fun, though. Hanging out with animals all the time. What could be more fun than that, right?” It wasn't sarcasm. It did sound like fun to hang around animals for work.
They probably made great company too, as long as they weren't trying to eat you. ”You don't? So you have several friends, right? Or at least a few good ones? Or does that only apply when you're having to do stuff?” he asked with a laugh. Gabriel didn't know too many people at the college, because he spent a lot of time working...and drinking. For awhile at least. He still worked quite a bit, because he had nothing better to do really. ”Oh, that might be a good idea. Since you lived there before you got here and you apparently miss it. I don't really know what I'm going to do. I'm in Vocal music right now, but I may get it changed in the future.” If he was in a band, he would have to go on tours. So if he did date someone, it would probably have to be someone who could put up with that. Unless, of course, he did change it to something else. He just wasn't sure what that something else would be.
His eyes set on the Academy in the distance. Like an actual University, the Academy was divided into separate buildings that served for multiple purposes. One being the dorm buildings, and surprisingly people could get away with being in opposite gender dorms and probably never get caught. 'Yeah, I understand. But if it's something you want to do, then maybe you should do it. Your dad might not be happy about it for awhile, but surely it wouldn't stop him from being proud of you for doing something like that.” Gabriel maneuvered around a tree that was in his path, slowing down only enough so that he wouldn't trip over the roots in the ground. ”I first shifted when I was thirteen years old. So around eight years ago and that long on a single island is crazy. But I think I'm going to take a break from here in the summer. Maybe not the whole summer, but the majority of it. Because I really need a break, you know?”
Some people didn't mind staying there, but he was a little more adventurous at times. And he wanted to go and see places and get out to take vacations. At least every once in awhile. Of course it all costs money, so luckily for him, he had a job that he could save up money with. It would be even cheaper if he stayed in a dorm room, but he had a little more freedom being in an apartment.
