x... ...x... ...x
A yellow car rolled lazily to a stop next to the curb, rumbling while it sat and periodically swiping its wipers across the windshield to combat the wet weather. Rain pelted everything, making loud noises ontop of the taxi cab and creating a rhythm that it would be more than easy to fall asleep to. Charly had succumbed.
After a moment of silence as he waited for his fare, the cab driver turned to the backseat and snapped his fingers. "Hey! Hey! Up and adam, sister!" His greasy stubble of a beard rolled along his multiple jowls as he spoke.
She groggily opened one large eye, and then the other. The drive from the airport hadn't taken quite as long as she had hoped--she desperately needed a longer naptime opportunity. She had been flying for days, catching only minutes of sleep as she worried in her window seat about the plane having enough fuel, and fretting over her time schedule and layovers while she paced in the various terminals she had been stuck in along the way. Flying from Hawaii to Madagascar was an ordeal that she never looked forward to.
Without saying a word, she grabbed her surprisingly small duffel bag at her side and clumsily ripped a twenty-dollar bill from her jeans pocket, which she handed to the impatient driver. One look out of the tinted window told her that the short walk to the apartment building's awning would be a dismal one; the raindrops were fat and relentless as they made their attack on earth.
Opening the car door, she mumbled a quiet "thanks" before slipping out into the night with her small bag of clothing and personal belongings. Her sneakers immediately soaked through as she stepped into the wet yard, but still no emotion showed on her face and she stumbled through the swampy grass to the door.
By the time that she made it to the entrance, her white hoodie was plastered to her skin with water, her jeans sagged from the extra weight, and with every step she shed oceans out of her shoes. Looking like a drenched rat, she fumbled in her pocket for her key card and finally managed to slip into the building.
Luckily, her apartment was the first one on the left, just feet from the lobby. Leaving puddles in her wake, she made it past her threshold and dropped her soaked bag onto the tiled floor of her kitchen, located just inside of the doorway. Closing the door with a foot, she immediately began peeling off her layers and throwing them alongside her duffel, eventually standing naked in the kitchen before exhaustedly moving to her modest living room and falling face-first onto her couch, pulling the decorative quilt off of the back cushions and over herself.
Sleep beckoned her. There hadn't been much of it since she had left the island for the holidays, as her home village had been in celebration mode for the duration of her stay. Now that she was finally past the nerve-wracking flights and drives and "unpacking", she could think of nothing better to do than drift off to dreamland--her favorite place to be.
