The moon hung high and full in the beautiful night sky. Stars glistered in the sky, as if someone had thrown sparkly glitter onto a piece of black paper. Cars zoomed by on the road, a couple hundred metres away and the peaceful sound of the waves crashing onto the shore could be heard. The tide was slowly coming in. There was hardly anyone on the beach, the amount of people there could be counted on one hand. But they were oblivious to the danger they were about to be in.
William Drake Reges stumbled across the shore, the hems of his jeans soaked with sea water and his sneakers caked in wet sand and clay. His feet sunk in the soft, wet sand and made it so much harder for him to walk. His Jackal was finally breaking free, having no more of this. Will hadn't shifted in over a year and a half, and the pain as his bones began to snap and reform and his joints pop was intense and unimaginable. Tears streamed down his cheeks and his vision blurred, the edges red as blood. His heart thundered against his chest and the fact he was fighting against the shift with all his strength, it was making the whole experience that much more painful. Will cried out in pain and dropped to his knees, his legs unable to hold his weight as the bones snapped and shorted, his feet forming paws and his toenails ripping through his sneakers to form claws.
"No, no, no, no, no," Will whispered in horror. This couldn't happen! He knew what had happened the last time he'd shifted, and if he didn't get help from another shifter soon, there was going to be a lot of dead people and a lot of unanswered questions. "Please, please stop," he begged as his fingers dug into the cold wet sand, offering no pain relief. His jeans were now completely soaked and his whole body was shivering from the coldness of not only the weather, but the freezing sea water. Even as he begged and cried from the shift to stop, his vision began to sharpen and his hearing became even better. His hands were turning into paws no, his nails thickening and turning to deadly claws. Please, someone help me, I can't bear it! At this point, Will knew that he would rather die than shift.

The only thing Will was grateful of was that it was in the middle of the night, in the cover of darkness, instead of in the daylight. He didn't really know why he'd gone on to the other island, even though he knew it was dangerous, but he couldn't change it now. Nor could he change the fact that he was shifting there and then. No matter how hard he tried, how hard he fought, his Jackal was stronger. His Jackal felt violated and had bidded his time until now, where he was at his strongest, and now, it seemed he was winning against Will.
Images flashed in Will's mind. So much blood. The sound of a woman screaming as he stood over a body, his father's body. He looked up to see his mother recoil with horror and disgust just before he pounced at her, sharp teeth barred and deadly claws out stretched. In his Jackal's eyes, he saw only prey, only food he could devour. But, this was his mother, the woman who had given him life and had raised him. He couldn't stop as teeth sunk into flesh, couldn't stop as blood flooded his mouth. He couldn't stop! "NO!" Will screamed, his back arching in both pain and the shift. He couldn't go through this again, he just couldn't!
Will was barely aware of something soft being thrown over his shifting body. Perhaps help was here? he thought dreamily, his mind no longer working as it should. He began to drift off, holding back the shift becoming too much work, he was exhausted. He needed rest. Needed to just give up. Then a girl was screaming at him. He managed to look up, eyes blinking where he saw a girl, no older than him, standing close to him. He looked over his shaking, half shifted body and saw she'd thrown a towel over him, probably trying to hide his shift from the humans. Will looked around hazily, amazed that he hadn't caught anyones attention. Tears were still streaming down his cheeks and he had no energy to feel embarrassed in front of the girl. She saying something about stopping his shift, but how could he?
"I'm trying," he croaked, his throat changing from that of a human to a jackal. However, some of his English accent came through. "I can't control it." He was on the verge of a mental and physical break down, his fear getting the better of him. "Get out of here before I hurt you...or worse..." His whole body spasmed violently, the pain so bad now that for a moment, he was blind. It would take a miracle to stop him now.

Mia was watching him carefully at first. The pitiful shaking of his body. She could see that he had changed in a few areas, and it definitely gave way that he was some sort of predator. Nothing that would help her if he actually shifted, especially since he seemed to have little to no control over himself while he was shifting she wasn't expecting him to have much power when he finally did shift. Which was understandable if he was new at this whole thing. She had only known for the past year, but she'd spent that entire year making sure she could control her instincts, and her ferret when she finally shifted. And she shifted ever so often to make sure she could continue on this aspect with her “inner freak.”
But this boy fought his shifting and fought it until he was on a human island. The idiot. She wanted to beat the shit out of him for doing so, but that wouldn't help anything and she might end up hurting herself more than she might hurt him. Idiot. That's all he was. Natural born idiot. And though he wasn't bad looking, stupidity didn't give him any points elsewhere. So for now she decided she didn't like this boy just because he truly was an idiot. Nothing less, but nothing more, surely. She stepped around him, watching him slowly. He was still a rather large person, and moving him would prove impossible given her small stature. Barely over 5 foot she wasn't exactly the strongest link. She frowned lightly.
“You can control it.”
She snapped at him, her eyes moving slowly around the beach to make sure she hadn't noticed anyone else that might be around. Her eyes back on him she only backed up a single step.
“You're not going to hurt me. You're going to snap the f*ck out of this.”
And with that she bent down at his side, grabbing around him as best as she could. Hoping for little hesitation she intended to throw him into the water, in hopes that would bring him to. He looked like a very canine-like animal, though. So he had no idea what would happen. But maybe the salt water would be enough to repulse the creature. At any rate he wasn't about to get the school in trouble for his stupidity.
“Don't fight me.”
She grunted, this taking quite a bit of energy out of herself by the simple act of grabbing him in just the right way.

Will knew without a shadow of a doubt that he was stupid. There was no way around that. But he honestly thought he was safe around humans. He had deemed his Jackal safe, since he hadn't expected him to try and shift in front of humans. Obviously that conclusion had been flushed down the toilet and was now in the sweage farm, along with many bad ideas and conclusions. Will was scared shitless, and this girl didn't seem to be helping either. She was basically shouting at him, and telling him things that he was already trying to do. She didn't seem to realise just how hard this was for him, especially when images of blood and flesh flashed in his mind, taunting him.
But even as Will tried and tried to fight against the shift, he felt his mind, body and soul becoming more and more animalistic. Will felt the girl step back, and his Jackal liked that. He liked that the other shifter was moving back, somewhat submitting to him. Will fought against the satisfaction, trying to think human thoughts. He imagined his human hands, standing on two human feet, running on the beach, feeling the sand between his toes. He imagined himself human, putting on clothes the human way. But it seemed that no matter how many time he envisioned himself human or thought like a human, it didn't work. His Jackal was too strong now. Will dug his fingers into the soft, wet sand, concentrating on the coolness of the small grains against his skin.
Will and his Jackal were shocked for a moment as the girl didn't back away, but moved forward and put her arms around him. Will crouched there, wondering what the hell she was doing. Hugging me isn't going to help, he thought, since he could no longer speak as his throat was now more animal than human. The Jackal, however, snapped out of his shock first, and before Will could stop him, growled menacingly towards the other shifter, warning her. However, the girl didn't seem to be backing off. Will began to wonder what she was hoping to achieve with this. But, he forced his Jackal not to fight the girl, instead, the Jackal fought Will, hard and fast, trying to break free of his human prison and run until his legs gave way and he could no longer see straight. Will simply kept still, watching the girl with a mixture of curiosity and worry.

So, there was a lot of stupidity in the actions that she was taking. He could change at any moment and tear her beautiful body apart. And ruin her clothes, which was just as much of a loss. She'd just gotten this suit and this happened to be one of her favorite jackets. If anything happened to her clothes he'd be going to the mall with her to buy some new ones. And they weren't cheap either. She never bought cheap clothing. Yes. If this all turned out badly he'd be buying her replacements for her, and he'd be waiting hand and feet while she healed up. But her poor skin. She could imagine his teeth in her now. Oh, what a terrible thought. Her beautiful skin would scar and she'd have to get her parents to let her have them lasered or whatever they do to make skin beautiful again. She frowned lightly.
Her feeble muscles didn't seem to be getting them very quickly towards the water but she had yet to stop trying. There was one thing about the girl. She never gave up when she decided upon something. And though she could have easily left him there to fend for his own she felt that she owed it to the school not to let this idiot change on an island full of humans where he would get caught and possible caged. Where he'd have to eventually change back and they'd find him in the cage. And people would question the school once they found out who he was. There would be trouble not only for the school but the students within it and that just wasn't going to work. Not in the slightest.
“I'm going to box you in the ears when this is over.”
It was more of a grunt between each breath as she maneuvered her feet in the sand pulling hard on his form. It seemed like hours but really was just a few minutes until the waves started to crash around them. She hoped her jacket wouldn't get too much sea salt on them as she kept moving, the sand sinking between her toes, and her feet going deeper with each footstep. With one last final step she moved around him and pushed him as hard as her body could push towards the water, hoping that it would engulf him and scare away that creature. If not, then she'd have to make a run for it. Not that she was sure where she'd go.

Will could feel his Jackal beginning to think about whether tearing the other shifter would make this shift easier or not. She seemed to want to stop it and he didn't like that. Will fought against him with every ounce of his being and strength, but even then he could feel white hot pin pricks on his skin as the fur began to sprout. In Jackal form, Will wasn't very big, but what he lacked in size, he made up for in speed and deadliness. His teeth was sharp and white, while his claws were thick, made for digging in to flesh and causing as much damage as possible. However, Will didn't know this. He always thought of his Jackal as a big, scary monster who haunted his dreams and his subconscious. He didn't know that his Jackal could be tamed. He'd seen other shifters around the school, and although he hadn't made friends, he'd noticed that they were all easy and in control of themslves. How did they do it?
Will, however, didn't have much time to dwell on those things, since he was nearing the end of his shift and his Jackal instincts were beginning to kick in. His face began to crack and pop as the bones reshaped into a small, thin muzzle with wickedly sharp teeth. But, all of this seemed pointless because the waves had suddenly become closer, much closer. The water had startled his Jackal, but only for a moment, and for a moment, his shift began to reverse, until his Jackal fought back and it was business as usual. What was this girl doing? He'd been so wound up in his thoughts and shift, that he'd forgotten about the girl, and her efforts to...hug him? He was still unsure of what the girl was doing, but it all became clear.
Will had only been swimming in the sea a few times, but even he knew it was cold, however, they didn't quite prepare him for the shock. Will was rolled into the freezing cold seawater, and panic began to swell as the water engulfed him and stopped his oxygen supply. He thrashed, water throthing like it had gone rabid but he didn't get any closer to the surface. The water depth there sloped dramatically, and Will found himself at the bottom of the slope. The shift had completely stopped and now he was fully human. Salt stung his eyes as he opened them to take a look and see where he was. His lungs were bursting and what was only seconds seemed like days. But luckily, reason flooded his mind and he soon found the surface, breaking it with such force, that he created his own set of powerful waves. He gasped, gulping in air as if he hadn't breathed in years.

Upon him hitting the water she had taken notice that he seemed to almost be fully turned into the creature, which she assumed really was a canine of some sorts. Probably a wolf, though it seemed smaller than that. It really was hard to tell when he wasn't full changed, though. And she wasn't exactly an animal kind of girl. She was more a numbers kind of girl and the fact that she had done something so stupid wasn't right to her, but as it were she really was helping herself in this too. To leave him would have been cruel to the school and to her well being. But this could get her hurt and this became more obvious as the animal reacted to the water. If it woke up the boy and he came to he'd be without his clothes if only for now. She could easily toss them his way and turn around, but if it didn't work then she'd have to find the closest tree and make quick up to the top and hope that his creature didn't climb trees.
She watched, her back tensing up as the animal began to become more human. At least what she could see of him. As limbs came up to splash it became more and more obvious of what was going on, and suddenly a third option came to mind. The person might panic and drown underneath the force of the tide. At which she'd have to jump in and save him. And without much thought her jacket was off and she tossed it behind her. Just in time to see the person sputter onto the ground in front of her, taking deep breathes. She looked back at her jacket, wet from the mayhem before lying in the sand only realizing that it would now be wet and sandy. She frowned heavily and looked towards the boy in front of her. If his clothes weren't already on then she tossed them at him without much more word as she waited for him to collect himself, looking away only if he was trying to place the clothes back on his body. She may have liked boys but she didn't like this one right now and she wasn't interested in looking at anything that he had.
In fact. She was mad. And as soon as he was situated she stepped forward and just as she had said she would she cupped her hands and forcefully boxed his ears with a painful suction. Her face a light red she moved back, hoping that he wouldn't retaliate and hit her back for it.
“You are so stupid!”
She hissed, “You know what you could have done? You could have gotten us as a group in so much trouble!”

Will had a glorious sensation as he had broken the surface of the water and gulped his first breath of sweet, sweet oxygen. He rubbed his eyes and looked around, a big grin on his face. "Oh, wonderful oxygen!" He'd never been so happy to breathe in his entire life. Will wasn't really a swimmer. He could swim, but only to a point. He couldn't swim like the Olympic swimmers, but he wasn't completely hopless...he didn't think.
As soon as Will managed to get his breathing under control, he felt the cold wind whipping his body, and the freezing waves lashing at his legs and stomach. He shivered and crossed his arms over his chest to preserve heat. His white shirt clung to him, almost see through, and emphasised his toned stomach, chest and arms. He pushed a hand through his soaking hair and trudged out of the frigid sea. His Jackal was totally under control, or as under control as Will could keep him. However, there would be one day when his couldn't stop his Jackal, and he would kill again. The thought scared him shitless.
Will's relief that he hadn't shifted was short lived as the girl came over to him and basically shouted right in his ear. Jeez, he was now deaf. He winced and stepped away from the girl, knowing that he was the fool she thought he was. Sighing, he looked to the sand and shook his head. "Look, I'm sorry. I've only shifted once and that was a total disaster and I thought I was safe here." Of course, he was walking talking evidence that he hadn't been safe there. He knew he was an idiot. He closed his eyes and let his head hang backwards, so he face was to the beautiful night sky and to the stars that looked like glitter on a piece of black paper.
"I know I'm stupid and you have every right to shout at me, so please do and don't hold back. I just don't care anymore," he said, hoplessly. Really, they should shoot him like a rabid dog and let it be the end of that. It would certainly make everyone's life a great deal easier and safer. He was a liability. He could and will kill again, he knew that and his Jackal knew that. It was just a case of who and when.
