xXx He didn't know what he was thinking. What he did know was that he wanted to see her again. He didn't understand the emotions that were traveling around inside of him, but he was doing his best. He tried telling himself that a meeting like this was perfectly fine, but that never seemed quite right. She was a student at the school. She was seventeen years old while he was twenty two. There was no possible way that this could be alright. He was a teacher. But he just needed to calm down. Things would go how they would go. He couldn't act all suspicious and nervous about it because that would only draw attention to him and to them. They were just friends. He just had to keep telling himself that.
So that's why he had suggested the idea of meeting at the beach. He never thought she'd forgive him after he almost killed her. However, he was surprised yet again by the fact that she had not only forgiven him, but was giving him another chance to be in her life. That was all that he needed. Maddox shook his head slightly as he continued his walk to the beach. It was close to campus, but it was right after school. No one was really at the beach, and that was fine with Maddox. Besides, they needed to find a quiet spot to be at anyway. Maddox finally saw the shore up ahead and couldn't be happier. He was glad that he was going to see her because she honestly made him happy. And nothing had made him happy since the day that he had murdered his older brother and had been disowned from his father.
His father was still trying to find him, but Maddox couldn't face him. His brother had meant the world to him, and to his mother and father. Alden was their golden child. He was going into the army and he was going to serve their country with his amazing ability. But Maddox had pulled that dream away from everyone involved. Their nerd of a son who shut himself in his room to read books and to study and to research had snatched that all away from them because he hadn't been able to control himself. He would never forgive himself for what he had done, and he was certain his family, or what was left of it, wouldn't either. But he couldn't let those thoughts drag him down today. He was going to have fun. He was going to convince Anja to go for a swim. She might not like it, but he'd drag her in if he had to. A small smile worked its way onto his face, and he found a quiet place to wait for Anja. Dropping down in the sand, he brought his knees up, and folded his arms over them. Now he just needed her to show up and today would be complete.

If you asked Anja why she'd been spending so much time with Mr. Maddox she would have told you that she had found herself a mentor in life. He really wasn't that much older than her, when she thought about it. Not really the age for a father figure, but he did have many of the qualities of her father and he was just about the best conversationalist that she'd met thus far. And they didn't really have to talk about much. It could be about their day and they were simply content in that, and they enjoyed each other's company. A friend and a mentor. She was glad she had found that in him, and though she no longer had any classes with him she came to him for help if she was ever in need of it. And he was always greatly willing to help. And she appreciated it more than he knew.
Though it had taken them a little while to get themselves to that stage. After he'd taken care of her after the attack there had been a tinge of fear that had hit her whenever she saw him. It had taken her a while not to remember what exactly had gone down that night. But she had soon realized just how stupid it had been given that she had little control over her shift as well, especially when there was something dead in the area. She had bitten down on that fear and had asked him to help her with her work, and from their they had flourished as mentor and mentee. She found such enjoyment in his company that she spent more time with him than any of her other friends. Not that she had many, given that she mostly kept to herself. And maybe that's what brought their friendship as even more of a surprise. He was a teacher and it was uncommon to actually be such good friends with one.
And there was something else there. Was it admiration for what he had overcome? His shift. He'd become a teacher, and... he was intelligent and skilled. He had so much potential to be whatever he might want to be and that was just glorious all on it's own.
And thus she'd been asked to the beach. She'd already explained her disdain for the ocean and the water in general, but he'd insisted that she meet him at the beach. She'd even put on a suit for the afternoon. A bikini that her mother had sent with her in hopes that she might end up on the beach. She'd placed a shirt and shorts over the suit and had walked towards the beach. There was a small skip in her step. She couldn't exactly place why, but she was in a rather good mood that evening. There was excitement in her step. Though it was rough with the simple fact that she wasn't going to be with her mother this Christmas... there was the fact that she was going to ask him to spend Christmas with her. Which was silly to be excited about, but she was sure they could do something that was enjoyable enough. Something to make up for missing her mother.
Down the steps and on the beach she spotted him pretty quickly, waving towards him and making her way across the sand. Her sandals sunk into the sand with each step, and she paused at his side. She pointed towards her skin, waving her arm in his direction.
“You'll have to help me put on sunscreen or I'm going to fry in this direct heat.”
With some hesitation she grabbed her shirt. She looked at him for one moment.
“You won't let me drown, right?”

xXx Maddox knew that people were going to think whatever that they wanted to think no matter what he said or anyone else said. So if they saw him and Anja together a lot, he couldn't change their opinions. However, he could say what he believed and knew to be true. They never did anything. They were friends, and that was that. He helped her with her school work when she needed it ,and that was about it. Maddox was an intelligent individual, even though he would never speak about it. He never even believed he was that smart. He had gotten through his college years quickly enough to become a doctor and a surgeon at twenty two, but that was because he didn't have a life outside of school. He had been able to direct everything and anything he had at his studies. His loneliness was something that aided him in starting the profession he wanted to get into. It wasn't a crime to therefore help the students of the school when they needed extra help.
He just didn't think that falling for one of them was part of the job description. Scratch that. Maddox knew that falling for one of them wasn't a part of his job description. He just needed to stop thinking about it like that. Anja was a good person, and he owed her the time he spent with her. However, that sounded cruel, and it wasn't the truth. He wanted to spend time with her, not just because he felt like he had to after what he had done. He liked spending time with her because of her intelligence and because she was just an interesting individual. He respected her, and that was all that mattered to him. That respect would allow him to keep himself in check. He would never hurt her the way that he had hurt her that night. He had lost control of himself and of his form, and he almost repeated the violent act he committed upon his brother. If he had killed another he would never forgive himself. He would make sure that he went to jail for something like that.
Maddox sighed softly as he sat in the sand. He just wanted to spend time with her, and there was nothing wrong with that. The young professor didn't have anything bad or wrong on his mind. He didn't even know if the emotions that he felt for her were anything deeper than a friendship and respect. She was an amazing person, and that was what he would leave it at for now. He couldn't think of their friendly relationship any other way. That was just what it was. A friend to friend thing. There was nothing wrong with that, and he knew of plenty of teacher and students that were friends outside of school. As long as they were close in the same age bracket, of course. Shaking his head, he ran his fingers through his hair as he sat upon the sand, watching the waves crash and slowly move back out to sea. He needed this peace and quiet. It allowed him to sort out his thoughts, and it allowed him to think about things that he normally wouldn't want to think about.
As he remained where he was, he heard a quiet voice behind him. Glancing over as she came to stand beside him, he looked up with a small smile and slowly lifted himself to his feet. He was taller than her by a good amount, but that didn't matter much. Hearing her words, he grinned, shaking his head. He was surprised that she had come. He knew she didn't like the water, or the beach for that matter. He was impressed by her courage.
"I won't let you down. You won't burn, I promise."
He said with a small laugh and then waited for her to hand over the sunscreen. Anything to make her happy. Having a friend like Anja was exactly what he needed in his life. His solitude wasn't something that he appreciated, but he knew he needed it. It was a sort of punishment for what he had done. But now that he had found Anja, he had to admit he didn't mind spending the time with someone like her.

He really was a sweet man. He seemed to know what to say to calm her nerves. She wasn't a water person and after that hurricane and those deaths of their fellow people she had been terrified of the water. But maybe he was the man that would help her get out of this rut. He had been the man that had made her feel more outgoing than she had before. She'd made attempts to make more friends instead of simply talking to people. She'd actually managed to attempt to see them again. To seek them out instead of brush past them when she saw them again. It wasn't that she wasn't social it was just that she rather liked her thoughts and being around people kept her from them.
And there was a smile upon her face. She ever so graciously gave him a nod of the head as she turned around. She never was one that showed much skin. To be honest she was very conservative and showing anything but her legs and maybe her shoulders here and there was as far as it went. She never wore tops that showed any cleavage, and she generally stuck to jeans or shorts. It was just in her nature, and as she slipped off her shirt she could feel her cheeks turn a light pink, the redness of embarrassment centering around her face and causing her body to heat up. The shirt fell to her feet and she turned, handing him the sun screen. She said nothing, but made it a quick movement in order to hide her face, and quite possibly anything else that was in the front, mainly a chest, or rather a non-existing one. She had always been a rather flat-chested woman. And she doubted she'd really gain much of anything by the time she was able to vote.
She stood still, her feet slowly ridding of her sandals as she let her towel fall next to her shirt. Rather haphazardly on the ground she spoke very little. It was odd in retrospect that a teacher would have his hands on another student, but as it were he was placing sun screen on his back. And he seemed to be doing just a fine job.
