Today was very fuchsia.
So thought Chara as she wriggled her toes in the water. She was sitting at the edge of the fountain, and her flipflops were some five feet away, forgotten. The water rippled slightly as it wrapped around her ankles and continued on to the edge of the structure.
There was a coin every so often at the base of the fountain, and Chara thought they looked rather lonely. Her hands went to her sides and searched around before she recalled she didn't have pockets today. That was really too bad. She wanted each coin to have a friend. A twin. Like Jack and Jill. Only maybe not a twin. She thought that a penny would be much better off with a big strong nickle to protect it. The dimes and quarters could go together. They both thought they were all that, being all shiny and all. Chara liked the pennies best. They were all coppery, and the head was backwards.
Standing, she started to wade around in the water, counting coins. One, two...
buckle my shoe. The rhyme popped into her head. Smiling, she started chanting aloud, pointing to each coin as she counted.
"Three, four, knock at the door. Five, six, pick up sticks. Seven, eight, lay them straight, nine, ten, count them again." She paused. There were three more coins and she didn't know if there was more to the rhyme. Even if there was more to the rhyme, she couldn't count it because she didn't know it. Perhaps she could make up her own?
"Eleven, twelve..." What rhymed with twelve, anyhow? Shelf? Sort of? If you said it just right? Like "shelves" but without the s. "Build a shelf(ve), thirteen...Now get a drink from the canteen!"
Rhyming was fun. Chara wondered if Dr. Suesse made all his books rhyme because he liked rhyming too.
Having finished counting the coins, she took a seat on the side again and mused on the number thirteen. It was said to be an unlucky number. Personally, she suspected thirteen got framed, but if it really was unlucky, she didn't want the fountain to explode or something. But she still didn't have a coin to give it, and she didn't want to be a thief and steal.
"What to do?" she mused aloud. Oh! Maybe someone had dropped a coin around the fountain? And then she could put it in so their wish could come true AND the fountain wouldn't explode.
Chara stepped out of the fountain and began her search. Her feet became quite dirty quite quickly, as the dirt stuck to the water on her feet. She circled the fountain, but no luck. She scanned the surrounding area, mind working on this dilemma and how to solve it.
