She could hear her heart beating in her head. It was louder than anything she had ever heard in her life, and it blocked out all other sounds. Everything was black and grainy-looking, and every now and then there was the faintest tint of red at the edges of her vision that would very quickly dissipate into the unusual darkness once more. Aside from her pulse, and the strangeness of her lack of sight, she felt calm and at peace. Memories from hours long past came back to her, and she thought through each of them as if reading a short novel.
The sun felt warm on her shoulders while her lower half was surrounded by the cool ocean water, the tiny waves lifting her onto her tiptoes before setting her feet gently back into the sand. Really, it was just like any other day in her life--she had slept in, had a late breakfast, and made for the beach straightaway. Of course, she should have been in class at this particular point in time, but nobody had ever come looking for her. This close to the end of the school year, she really doubted that anyone cared much whether she showed up or not.
From her blackness and silence, she could vividly remember feeling an odd current beneath the waves that caught her attention. It was very faint, but for someone who spent as much time in the bay as she did, it was noticeable. It gave her no cause for alarm, and she had laid back to float on top of the blue water and absorb some extra-delightful Vitamin D. More than anything else, she remembered the way that the breeze smelled like hibiscus flowers.
Something bumped into her with enough force to disrupt her buoyancy and sink her for a few milliseconds. In her confusion, she had swallowed a mouthful of salt water and was having a very hard time figuring out which way was genuinely "up". It was just enough time for the other body to slam back into her, and grab onto her thigh with its teeth. The pain was immense, as if several dozen steak knives had been stabbed into her bones at the same time, and it felt as if her leg was on fire. Suddenly she was being shaken, and it was harder and harder to discern just how deep beneath the surface of the ocean she was.
Her lungs rebelled finally and took in a breath, filling with water and forcing out what little air had been left inside of them, and her nose and mouth were flooded with the coppery scent and taste of blood--her own, no doubt. Something leathery was lurching around her legs, ripping away at her muscles and retreating to the depths with its victim fixed in its jaws. She couldn't fight; she was too stupefied. If she were to shift, which her brain screamed at her to do, she wasn't sure what the result would be--she might just be swallowed whole. She couldn't breathe, and her thoughts were becoming fewer and further between. This is it... was the last phrase that faded into her mind.
She mulled over that last thought, resting peacefully in her silent, pulsing darkness. It couldn't be right. There was more somewhere, and she just couldn't remember it right away. The animal had left, she knew, deciding that its prey was not what it had intended to chomp on. There was someone who had watched from the beach, and she knew it had been them who had gotten her to safety.
Safety.... Right. That's where she was now.
The blackness faded out, letting in light and muffled sound. It felt nice to breathe, though she was sure that something was stuck down into her throat and doing much of the work for her. Eyes flickering open, she took in the bleary scene before her--white sheets, white walls, and many many white people. There was an unimaginable pain below her waist, but she felt far too tired to investigate.
At that point, the hospital personnel had long since identified her as a student, and had gotten into contact with the school. No doubt, word had already spread about Little Pinky Sharkbait, and a cautionary tale about skipping school had been written and retold dozens of times. She wondered if anybody was going to come and see her--Brianna, Benji, Gabriel, even Piscine... A nurse approached, smiling much too happily, and told her that her mother was flying in from Brazil.
Pinky groaned, or attempted to through the tube in her mouth, and instinctively clicked the red button on the remote control clasped in her left hand, releasing a dose of morphine into the IV stuck into her arm. The white sheet spread across her lower body scared her. Were there two legs beneath it, or just one? Thinking about it made her light-headed and a bit nauseous.
She was certain that her life would be over if she was down to one leg. Pedicures would be only half as fun, shoe shopping would be miserable. Swimming would make her look retarded. And how was her shift going to be affected? When she morphed, she lost her legs anyway, and her tail was formed by an extra length of spine; maybe it would be okay.
Another nurse flitted in to check on her and pull out the breathing tube now that she was awake, and Pinky tearfully asked if she had lost the leg. The nurse explained that no, it was still there, but it looked absolutely dreadful. The young woman would be in line for many skin grafts in the coming years, and there would always be a nasty looking scar. Before she left the room, she set Pinky up with a box of apple juice and instructions on how to use the remote control.
Now that she could speak aloud, she laid her head back onto her pillow and sighed. Only two words came to mind at that moment, as she laid in her small, white, boring room that smelled like soap. "Fucking shark."

Word about a girl with pink hair who had gotten bit by a shark got around the island fairly quickly. He wasn't sure how many girls actually had pink hair on the island, but he only knew one. But it seemed that nobody knew who the girl was, so he finally decided to visit the hospital himself to make sure. When he entered the building, he went straight up to the front desk where a nurse was sitting behind it as calm as she could be. As if she was at a park, rather than a hospital. ”A girl was brought in here awhile ago. She had pink hair and-”
The nurse looked up at him, still rather calm. This really frustrated Gabriel, but before he could continue on, she interrupted him. ”Are you related to her?” He should have known they were going to ask him this. Usually when the answer was no, they never let them in without them getting permission. But he thought he would give it a shot anyways. ”No, but-” The look she gave him pretty much said it all. That she was not going to let him pass and that he should have seen it coming.
“Then you will have to wait out here.”
Gabriel took a deep breath and released the counter. ”Fine, but can you at least tell me if she is okay?” She didn't look like she wanted to give him any information, but really.. didn't they feel bad about withholding information from friends? Granted he hadn't known her that long, but it didn't make him any less worried about the unexpected situation.
“She'll be fine. Now please take a seat over in the waiting room.” It was clear that she wasn't going to let him through, so he took her advice and sat down in the waiting room. He had no intentions of waiting, though. But to make it seem more realistic, he had to sit out there quite awhile. Gabriel could tell that he was being watched, so he went to the vending machine and got something to drink. When the bottle was empty, he tossed it in the trash and headed for the bathrooms. Luckily they were passed the nurse at the desk, so when he emerged and he noticed she was busy talking to someone else, he slipped out the door and down the hallway.''
Sooner or later she would probably notice him missing, but at least he could visit a bit before then. And hope they didn't kick him out when they found him. He glanced into the rooms as he passed by them; he felt like he was being nosy every time he looked into one that had visitors. But it was really the only way. Finally he came across the room that she was in. It didn't really look any different from the others that he had seen. The only difference was the person that was in it. He glanced around him and then slipped into the room quietly and approached the bed. It was obvious that she was awake and she wasn't happy.
”I came as soon as I heard, but the damn nurse wouldn't let me in. Are you okay?” He leaned forward and then gently kissed her forehead and pulled one of the chairs forward and took a seat.

The morphine muddled her brain and made her want to doze off again, but she was terrified that if she slept at all something bad might happen to her or any of her limbs. If the morning had been any indication, Murphy's Law was definitely in effect that day, and she didn't want to risk it. The television was off, but she stared at the blank screen anyway while her head was tilted back amid the pillows that smelled like old, sick people. Her thoughts kept wandering between many unrelated topics: graduation was soon, college would be next year if she chose to go, boys were awesome, her leg hurt, how was she going to wear denim shorts now, who was going to feed her fish while she was laid up like this...
And suddenly there was a familiar voice in her ear. "I came as soon as I heard, but the damn nurse wouldn't let me in. Are you okay?" the sultry vocals asked, brightening up her dismal room. A moment later there was a warm dampness on her forehead that she recognized as an affectionate kiss, and she smiled comfortably at the sensation. Had there been enough blood left in her body to do so, she might've blushed.
Rolling her head to the side so that she could look at her visitor, she made an aggravated face and blinked slowly. "You know how we wanted to catch a shark, Gabey? I caught one," she said with an attempt at humor in her voice, closing her eyes and lying her head back into the pillows. "Sort of."
|
It was sort of odd that they had so recently talked about sharks and how awesome they were. Suddenly, she was having a very hard time keeping her composure. Her normally chipper, tough exterior had been gnawed away along with most of her thigh, and the mix of emotions that she was feeling finally came to a pinnacle when she began to cry. She didn't particularly want for Gabriel to see her so vulnerable, and her fingers wiped at each of her eyes while she held her breath to choke off a sob before it started. Pinky was not generally a crier. It took a lot to hurt her feelings, and she had a fairly high tolerance for pain. It was not important in the least, but she kept thinking that she must look awful. Her normally sun-kissed skin was pale from trauma, her pink hair fanned out around her in a tangled mess, and the hospital gown was not flattering in the least. It upset her that her mind could even think about such a trivial thing as appearance at a time such as it was, and that made it all the more difficult to hold back her tears. She wanted to look at her leg and assess the damage, but at the same time she didn't. What would it be like? She knew that the surgeons had merely closed off the wound, and hadn't done much in the way of reconstruction--that would come later. What was left of her thigh throbbed and itched, but if she even attempted to wiggle her toes at the end of that leg a pain shot up her spine. The box of applejuice sat untouched next to her bed, and to distract herself from her built up misery she reached for it and sipped at the straw. She wanted to talk to Gabriel because he made her feel better, but she was scared of breaking down.

[/blockquote] WC: 591 Tag: Gabriel! Notes: herpderp

Gabriel's body sank into the chair – it wasn't the most comfortable chair, but it would do. Although he was about tired of sitting down now. He nodded in answer as she began to speak. It was odd that they had been talking about a shark not too long ago and suddenly this is what happened. It was more like the shark had caught her than the other way around, but he didn't say that out loud. ”This isn't exactly what I had in mind when I wanted to get a shark.” And honestly he knew it was dangerous to keep a shark, which was why he had been joking when he mentioned that. Though why there was a shark that far inland was beyond him.
He leaned forward when she began to cry and took her hand in his after she wiped away the tears. ”It's okay to cry if you want to. I'm not going to think any less of you if you do,” he reassured her. Anyone in that situation had a right to do so. Her bubbly personality was gone for the time being, but that was understandable. Gabriel honestly didn't expect her to be acting that way when he showed up, so it was no surprise that she wasn't. He raised her fingers to his lips and kissed them. There wasn't really much that he could do to make her feel better, but at least he had managed to visit.
He figured he should talk some more and maybe it would help the situation a little. That way it wouldn't be all quiet and maybe she wouldn't feel too awkward laying on the bed, center of attention. Although usually that's what she liked, but that was a different situation. ”You wouldn't believe what I had to do to get in here. I had to sit out in the waiting room for about an hour and then I finally had to sneak back here.” Not to mention the drink he bought just to go along with his plan to escape back there.
”So don't be alarmed if I'm kicked out,” he joked. Honestly he wasn't sure what would happen if they came back to her room and found him in there. Gabe noticed the apple juice, which she proceeded to pick up and drink. He released her hand and settled back into the chair and gave her a comforting smile. Well, at least he hoped it was. ”They had better give you good food. Or else I'm going to have to rearrange their menu to stuff that tastes good.” Not that he could really do that. Too bad.

Listening to Gabriel talk about his adventure seemed to relax her a bit, gradually. At first, she managed to make eye contact with him again, and then she set the juice box down while her hand returned to cover her mouth. Finally, she cracked a tearful smile when he mentioned the hospital food, and she removed her hand so that he could see. "They definitely won't be feeding me lobster tail, that's for sure." Her voice was on the meek side, sure, but she was speaking.
Her eyes were watery, but she maintained her gaze on him thoughtfully. Gabriel was a true friend, which was funny because she had met him in a very random and unconventional manner. Their friendship had been fast, and so far, strong. And now he was her lone visitor and connection to the outside world. "So...I guess everyone knows about this now,"
|
she mused, unhappily. She felt very foolish in this situation--she was the fish girl. How was it that she could be dumb enough to be attacked by a shark? Some people say that she might have had it coming to her, she supposed. "I won't let them kick you out. I'd be so depressed in here alone... it's been such a horrible morning," she said, her voice coming out in not much more than a whisper. She picked a ball of lint from the white sheet concealing her lower half, antsy once more about what lay beneath it. Finally, she took a deep breath, braced herself, and lifted the corner of the covering to peek underneath it. Just below her hip joint, her once voluptuous right thigh had been ripped away. The edges of her skin looked frayed, though they had been stitched and stapled together in a messy sot of way. Muscle mass was gone, and the abnormal dent left in her leg made her a bit nauseous. Pinky normally had a strong stomach, but it was enough that she dropped the sheet back down and reached for the bedpan that rested on the cheap desk next to her bed. She was sure that there was nothing in her stomach that she could throw up, but she held the bedpan close anyway while she attempted to focus her attention on Gabriel once again. Idly giving the red button in her hand another click and immediately feeling the cold morphine in her arm veins, she attempted to sit up a little straighter and look less pathetic. She was immediately met with a horrible, ripping pain, and choked back a yelp as she froze in place, eyes closed and brow furrowed. So, moving was bad, then. She made a note. Gabriel laughed and shook his head. ”No, I don't think they will be giving you any lobster tail. But when you get out of here, I'll take you out to eat and you can eat something really good,” he offered. Something that was non-hospital food; he wasn't sure how good or bad it really tasted, since he had never been in the hospital long enough to eat any of their food. ”My treat.” No way would he let her pay for that. Of course he was a little old fashioned, thinking he should pay for just about everything when he took a girl out to eat. But usually that didn't happen, because the girl wouldn't let him.
He shrugged slightly when she said that everyone knew about her situation. ”Not everyone. But it does seem that the news travels fast, considering that's how I got here. But it doesn't matter that everyone else knows, does it?” Unless they were going to wish her well, then their thoughts really didn't matter. Gabriel smiled and glanced up at the TV, which was off for the moment. ”Well I'm glad you wouldn't let them, but it probably would be a good idea for you to get some rest.” Rest was one benefactor to getting better, he knew that much. And she probably wasn't going to sleep while he was in there, unless her she got too tired to hold her eyes open. ”Or maybe you could watch some television. I'm sure you could find something interesting on.”
Maybe he should have brought her some magazines to look at. But then again, when he first heard the news he hadn't be sure it was actually her. On his next visit he could bring her some, though. Since he figured she would be in there for awhile. He watched as she nervously looked under the white sheet covering her lower body and he could see the color drain from her face. Not that there had been much there before when he entered. He was afraid to ask her if she still had both of her legs. ”I don't think you should be moving,” he told her anxiously, as she attempted to sit up but was welcomed with more pain instead.
”Don't make me strap you down like you're in a psychiatric ward.” His attempt at a joke – it was lame. Gabe wished he could hold her and make her feel better, but that wasn't really possible at this point. ”So how did you get here exactly? Did someone pull you out of the water or...?” Or perhaps she didn't know or didn't remember, but he was curious as to who it was or what had happened exactly. Otherwise she would have drowned in that water.

"I'd love to go out to eat with you," she admitted, careful to remember to say to eat. A slip of the tongue would be one more embarassing thing to add to her day. She would fight him over paying, insisting that they go dutch on the meal, and it would be interesting to see who won out--Gabriel with his charming, beguiling smile, or Pinky with her obstinate hands-on-hips stance.
She agreed with Gabriel--she shouldn't be moving. His words were enough to make her lay back and give in, though she was beginning to feel sore from lying in the same position for so long. At his question, she searched back into those memories that had so recently come back to her, and she nodded her head a few times. "Somebody waded out and got me, and then brought me here. I have no idea who it was, but I'm glad they did it."
|
Very glad. Despite everything that had happened, she felt a need to defend the animal. "It wasn't the shark's fault, I guess...I do smell like seafood most of the time. After it took the first bite I think it realized that I don't taste quite as good as I look," she joked meekly. Being near her friend seemed to lift her spirits a great deal. "It was a bull shark. They're one of my favorites." She genuinely felt no ill will towards the giant carnivorous fish. It had let her go, after all. She took another sip of her apple juice, this time because she was actually thirsty and not trying to distract herself. "Do you think you could take care of my fish? I cleaned their tanks a few days ago, so all you have to do is feed them...Willy will be glad to see you. Tell them I'm okay for me?" she implored, her eyes wide and serious as she gazed at him. She would need to write down how much of which food that Gabriel would need to drop into the aquariums, before he left. Hopefully she wouldn't forget between now and then. "My mom is coming," she mumbled, sounding less than enthused. She hadn't seen her mother since Christmas, and that had only been for a few short hours when the woman had flown in--literally. She imagined that locals had been a bit confused about why a Canadian goose was seen flying so far out into the Pacific Ocean. Pinky loved her mother, and on a normal occasion would have been overjoyed to see her, but Tandy was like a tornado when she passed through. Pinky Thoms had gotten her wild streak from her, for sure. Gabriel was glad that she agreed to go and get something to eat with him as soon as it was possible. They could decide where they should go at a later date. Or they could just walk around until they found a place that looked interesting enough. He was curious as to whether she was going to be one of these women that had to pay part of it or not. ”Good, it's a date then. Whatever that means,” he teased. The smirk on his face gave away that he knew exactly what that meant. Although he was mostly saying it, because that's what everyone said on that cue.
Gabe was surprised that someone had actually gotten into the water to save her, unless they hadn't known there was a shark in there. Most people wouldn't take a chance if there was a shark in there that could possibly eat them. But he was glad that they had done it anyways. He gave her a skeptical look as she told him that it wasn't the sharks fault. ”Well you would think that it would realize you don't look like anything else that it normally eats and then it would leave you alone.” Obviously they weren't that smart, though. Just like animals that ran out into the road thinking they could get across before they got hit.
”You don't?” he teased, doing his best to look disappointed at this. That was debatable, though he thought. He knew he probably shouldn't be perverted right now, but if it made her feel any better, then why not? It wasn't like there was anybody else in there at that moment, so it wasn't really considered being rude. He nodded at the mention of her fish. ”Sure, I'll take care of them for you. As long as you tell me which fish eats what and how much of it to give them.” He would feel really bad if they died because he overfed them or something like that. Gabriel would also be happy to see Willy again. ”I'll be sure to tell them.”
”Shouldn't you be happy?” he asked, at the mention of her mom coming to visit her. He figured he probably shouldn't be there when she showed up, since they'll probably want some alone time to talk and stuff. Gabriel hadn't talked to his own family in awhile. He probably should give them a call and talk to them. He had gotten a few emails and replied to them, but the conversation didn't last too long. And it wasn't quite the same as hearing their voice.

She waved him off at the comment about the shark, as she often did. Fish were very complicated animals as far as she was concerned, and the inner machinations of their minds were a puzzle that even she couldn't quite put together at times. Some researchers believed that sharks attacked people mostly because they resemble seals and other natural prey, but normally that was when a victim was surfing. There were many reasons that the bull shark had been sniffing around her, and she doubted if she would ever really know for sure why.
Gabriel made a perverted comment, and she grinned a grin that was almost her trademark one. If he kept at it, she would be feeling better in no time. "Well I look like cotton candy, right? I might be just as sweet." Uncalled for, maybe--but it did make her happy. "I'll write it all down for you before you go. It's not that complicated, but the labels on the cans are pretty similar so you have to be careful. Don't be too worried, though, because they're really picky and they won't eat the wrong kind of food if you accidentally put it in there."
|
It was true, especially of Willy the batfish. Pinky had gone through four different brands of the same mixture of food before she'd found one that the fish would eat. At first, she had thought Willy to be sick, but as it turned out she was simply very high maintenance. "Well, yes. But she's so--ugh, I don't know. We're so much alike that she gets on my nerves sometimes," Pinky confessed. Of course, her mother was a bit more responsible and had raised a child, but her nights were still filled with partying, strangers, boozing, and rock and roll. Tandy was a free spirit, just like her daughter. "But she won't be here for a while." She wasn't sure if Tandy would behave herself around Gabriel--she was a bit of a cougar lately. Her last boyfriend had been twenty-three, which was quite an age difference from Tandy's 40 years. The thought crossed Pinky's mind that if her mother flirted with Gabriel, she might actually be jealous. "Please don't leave. I know this room is awful...I don't even want to be in it. I'll tell the nurses that we're married or something." Her juice box ran dry, and made a hollow noise as she continued to suck on the straw in vain. Disappointed, she looked around the room until she spied a trash can by the door, and took careful aim at it. With a concentrated look, she tossed the empty box at it and grinned in satisfaction when it went in with a swish. "Still got it."

[/blockquote] WC: 455 Tag: Gabriel! Notes: D: yarr. i would go crazy.

He was glad to see her smile at his remark, however perverted it was. Though he hadn't actually thought that she would care. Gabriel laughed as she retaliated with one of her own and he nodded. Well she did look kind of like cotton candy. ”Well I do have to say, in my personal opinion, that cotton candy does taste really good.” Maybe a little too sweet at times, though. Gabriel stood up and walked around the small room a bit. He had been sitting down too much already and was getting cramped sitting in that chair. But there also wasn't that much room in there either; there never was.
”Okay, I won't worry too much then. I'll try and remind you before I leave.” He walked over to the window and looked out of it. It was nice outside, but he would rather be in there to keep her company. After all, there would be other nice days where he could be outside doing stuff. ”Oh, so there's two of you? I'm not so sure I can handle two of you,” he said laughing, trying to imagine what she would be like. An older version of Pinky. But he imagined her as one of those people that could be a little irresponsible at times for their own benefit. Not that he was going to judge her that way. He turned back around to face her and leaned up against the small window sill. ”Oh good. More alone time for us,” he joked.
”This room is awful,” he agreed, looking around at the white wall with practically nothing on it. ”They should paint some of them.” That wasn't going to happen, though. ”I don't think they would believe you if you told them we were married. But don't worry, I'm not going to leave.” He wasn't going to act stupid and freak out because she said the M word. They weren't even dating anyways. But she also didn't look the type that would want to be attached to someone so quickly like marriage would give. ”Especially if the woman from the front desk came back here. I already told her we weren't related.” Maybe he should have lied and then maybe he would have gotten by with it.
He watched as she tossed the empty juice box into a trash can and made it. Although he could have gotten up and thrown it away for her, but she seemed to have that already worked out by herself. ”Nice shot. Bet you can't do it twice,” he teased, relaxing his head up against the wall as he continued to sit on the window sill. ”If you get thirsty again, I can run down the hall to a vending machine and get you something to drink.” They had some healthy stuff in it, like juice and water. Although he guessed if a nurse or a doctor came in, they could get her something else too.

Perhaps he was right; they didn't really have that "married" vibe between them. And then he had to go and ruin it by being honest to the receptionist. Lame. "Well, damn. I could just hide you under my blanket," she suggested teasingly, lifting her sheet a bit and giving him a wan smirk. She was careful not to actually look beneath the covering again, and quickly dropped the corner back down as the smell from her wound was not too great either.
Her thoughts wandered for a moment, as they were apt to do, and she realized that she would more than likely have to sleep alone in that horrible, boring room. Odds were that they would eventually find Gabriel and kick him out the door, and her mother probably wouldn't stay more than a few hours to make sure that her daughter was alive before she flew off again on her way to the next party. It was going to be lonely, quiet, and terrible. She didn't have her phone, and odds were she would be without her laptop as well.
"I could go for a Dr. Pepper, probably. I haven't had soda in years, but I think that I want one. It sounds good,"
|
she said, thinking about it. Her liquid diet had been made up of water, alcohol, and tea since she had started school at the Academy, so long ago. After the day that she'd been having, she supposed that she deserved a little high fructose corn syrup in her life. "And I'm hungry," she grumbled, when in reality she just needed something to keep her attention away from where she was and why she was there. "I wish I could get up. It's hard for me to even sit still for class." The only other time she had been confined to a bed was when she had chicken pox as a young child, and even then she had snuck out of her room and played in the kitchen when her mother was away. With her leg in the condition that it was, she doubted that she would be able to get up for anything. Which meant... "Wait. How in the hell do I take a piss?!" she cried out, bemused. She'd better figure it out soon--the apple juice was quickly replenishing her lost fluids and her bladder would soon fill up. Peeing the bed was not something that she was ready to do. Gabriel laughed as she teased about hiding him under the blanket. Somehow that was still a turn on despite the situation. How pathetic was he? He winked at her playfully as she put the blanket back down. ”I know, I know. I shouldn't have told her we weren't related. But I figured she would find out sooner or later.” And at least if he got caught, they couldn't say that he lied about it. He yawned quietly, unsure why he was tired all of a sudden. It had to be the atmosphere. ”Okay, I'll go and get you one,” he said, lifting his head off of the wall and digging in his pocket for change.
”Well there isn't much that I can do about the food, but if I see someone who looks like they can help, I'll be sure to flag them down and tell them you're hungry.” Though everyone out there pretty much looked the same, in their typical hospital outfits that everyone hated seeing. After counting out enough change, he stood up and looked at her. ”Well this isn't class, so stay put.” Gabe couldn't help but laugh at her next comment. He honestly wasn't sure about that. ”Good question. I'll ask someone about that too while I'm out.”
He leaned over and gave her hand a comforting squeeze before heading to the door. ”I'll be back.” He slipped out into the hallway that was actually pretty quiet. Nerve racking quiet, actually. Gabriel walked back in the direction that he had come from earlier, because that was where he had seen the vending machines. He stopped in front of a drink machine and entered his coins into it and pushed the button for the Dr. Pepper. It didn't take long for it to drop down into the opening. But as he began to reach for it, he noticed the nurse from the front desk and quickly hid beside the machine out of sight.
It was hard to keep it from looking obvious at what he was doing, but he managed. He glanced around the corner to notice she was gone and quickly reached into the opening and pulled out the Dr. Pepper. It made him feel a bit stupid to actually be hiding from a nurse in a hospital, though he wasn't sure if she was looking for him or not. Once back in the room with Pinky, he realized he forgot to ask a nurse about that stuff that he said he would ask about. ”Um...so I forgot to ask someone about food and stuff.. but!” He held out the Dr. Pepper for her to take. ”I did remember this part at least.”

Waiting for Gabriel's return, Pinky clicked the red button once more. She may as well get use out of the morphine while she could--she wouldn't be able to drink for a few days, she was certain. As it chilled her body, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath, imagining the scent of hibiscus again. The deeper she inhaled, however, the more and more she smelled the strange fleshy, bloody odor coming from her leg. She had been sleeping a lot that day, but it was tempting to drift off into a nap.
And just like that, he was back. The Dr. Pepper was cold in her hand, and she excitedly opened the top and took a deep, fizzy drink. It had been so long since she had experience carbonation that it tickled at first, and as soon as the sip went down she began to hiccup. "Well let's just hope, hic, that I don't piss myself hic." Her body shook visibly with each burst of air, so she set the soda down to keep from spilling it on herself.
Holding her breath for a moment, she looked Gabriel up and down for the first time since he'd arrived. It felt necessary to comment on his rear. "I'm so glad that you and your fantastic butt came to see me, Gabey Gabe,"
|
she purred playfully. She was actually surprised that he was the first one who had come to visit. Gabriel was great. As soon as the hiccups seemed to subside, she reached for the drink again and gave it another go. The sugar felt good in her stomach, and helped to block out the knowledge that her leg was half eaten. She wondered what sort of reaction would happen between the sugar, the caffeine, and the morphine, and supposed that she would soon find out. A sincere thought came to her mind when she considered how nice Gabriel was, and she began to voice it. "About the date thing," was all that could be said before there was a loud rap at the door and the flashy entrance of Pinky, aged about 20 years and rocking big, brown curls. "Oh sweetie I'm here!" she announced, whirling into the room and flitting to the bedside. Tandy was only a few inches taller than her daughter, with an hourglass shape and a cheerful, dewy face. She wore what would probably be considered airport clothing--pink yoga pants, a yellow tank top, and a green hoodie. It was obvious that she had just made a harrowing flight in. After greetings and gentle hugs were exchanged, her eyes cut sideways and she caught sight of Gabriel. "Oh hello there," she murmured, blue eyes twinkling mischievously. One could almost hear the cougar purr.

[/blockquote] WC: 459 Tag: Gabriel! Notes: gabe, meet tandy xD

Gabriel laughed and shook his head as she began to hiccup from the carbonated drink. He figured if it had been that long since she had had one, then she should probably go easy on it for a bit. He realized that he still had the rest of his change held tightly in his hand, so he dropped it back into his pocket where it was out of the way. He smiled, amused that she was still going on about how he looked. ”You're not surprised, are you?” Though maybe she should be. He sat down on the edge of the chair and pushed his hair out of his eyes so that he could see her better. ”It's really no big deal. I just wanted to check up on you and make sure you were okay.”
She was alive at the very least and according to the nurse she would end up okay. He was a caring person, especially towards his friends, even though some people said that he didn't really look like that type of person. Gabe reached up to fix his sunglasses, which he had completely forgotten about up until now. They seemed to have worked their way crooked on his head, which was where he had left them. Once they were up there for awhile, though it was hard to remember that they were still there. Several times he had almost broken them because of this.
Pinky began to speak again, but as soon as she started, she was interrupted by someone entering the room. A quick glance over his shoulder told him that he should probably get out of the way, so he stood up and stepped off to the side to clear a way to the bed. It didn't take him very long to realize who it was. His eyes skimmed her...interesting outfit. Pink pants, yellow top, and green hoodie. While they greeted one another, he stood there quietly, wondering if he should step out until she left. But before he could even make this decision, she seemed to have noticed that he was there.
“Oh, hello there.”
He wasn't sure whether he should feel intimidated, or grossed out that her mom was looking at him that way, or- well, like he said he wasn't sure. Shouldn't she be more worried about her daughter and comforting her rather than paying him any attention? And didn't she say it would be awhile before she arrived? He managed a smile anyways. ”Hello, you must be Pinky's mother. It's nice to meet you.” Gabriel took a few steps forward and held out his hand to greet her with. Well, in any case, perhaps he was reading it wrong.

Obviously, Pinky was surprised at how quickly her mother had arrived. The woman must have dropped everything that she was doing and got on the first plane that she could find; that impressed the girl immensely. Her mother had a tendency to put her work and her recreation before her family relations, which worked out well most of the time. It seemed that she did have the capacity to feel a sense of urgency.
Her eyes narrowed, however, when Tandy's eyes fixed on her friend. Of course, Gabriel was a complete gentleman and offered his hand, which Tandy took in her own and shook gleefully. So this is what jealousy feels like? Huh....weird... She could honestly say that she had never felt such a thing in her life. What did that mean?
And then. "You must be Piscine! I've heard so much about you!" Tandy exclaimed, excitedly. It was easy to see where Pinky got most of her mannerisms.
"Mom, Piscine and I broke up forever ago. I told you that. This is Gabriel--he's my friend."
|
Already, she was ready for this little visit to be over with. Tandy seemed a bit taken aback for a moment, but recovered herself and gave the young man a very familiar smile. "Charmed. Now sugar," she began, her Creole accent coming on stronger with each word as she turned to her daughter, "Are you alright? I told you not to go splashing in the ocean, didn't I? Let me see." Before Pinky could stop her, Tandy lifted the sheet, squealed, and dropped it back down. "Oh honey!" All Pinky could do was stare at Gabriel, eyes pleading don't you dare leave, as her mother hugged her tightly around the neck and stroked her pink hair. "Are you staying long, Mom?" she asked, trying not to sound too eager about the idea. Whilst Tandy broke off the hug and returned to the doorway to retrieve a heavy canvas bag, she chirruped in a sing-song voice in reply. "Not for too long, hon. I've got to get back to the States by morning." She returned to the bedside, resting the bag precariously close to Pinky's injury, and she proceeded to dig through it like a small burrowing animal. "I brought you magazines and some snacks, and I stopped by your dorm to get you some" she lowered her voice to a bare whisper, glancing teasingly at Gabriel, "underwear. Your laptop is in here. I couldn't find you phone though." Their relationship may seem strained at first glance, but Tandy had always been responsible when it came to raising her child and keeping her comfortable. She worked as an executive officer for a well-known, widespread business, and made good money. After bills were paid, whatever was left over from her paycheck was deposited into Pinky's bank account--support for the girl's shopping addiction. Pinky actually blushed a very small amount at the mention of her underwear. It was one thing when she announced such things to Gabriel herself, but when her mother did it, it was weird. "Thanks, Mom. I think my phone got left at the beach..." Tandy whirled around again, turning to Gabriel and fixing him with her Cajun gaze. "So you're going to take care of her, right?" Pinky groaned in the background.

[/blockquote] WC: 549 Tag: Gabriel! Notes: awwww she's not so bad xD;;
